After quarter of an hour on my hands and knees the answer came to me. I sellotaped 8 FT niobium magnets to a ruler and found the screw in two minutes.

I find walking barefoot uncovers many lost items...usually involving a certain amount of pain

Good idea, why did I not think of making use of the magnets on door... . I'm forever dropping screw when I'm at work and the carpet is......a steel grey colour.

Just a tip to add to this, if your doing it in your workshop type area cover the magnets with kitchen roll, otherwise they end up coated in all the other swarf and detritus that's lying around, I learnt the hard way.

I have two methods, one is a longish bendy wand with a magnet on the end (bought from Pound Land a while back), and the other is a sturdy metal led torch with an extendable (aerial type) wand that can be pulled/pushed back out from the centre of the led lens. I bought that when I used to work for Pumb Centre... I found a missing 510 pin a while back from my Nautilus base (when it worked) by sweeping the floor area like a mine detector, but both were originally bought for grabbing little screws when taking my PC apart for some TLC cleaning, when they made a bid for freedom inside the chassis..

An old pair of my tights, or a stocking (preferably with a seam up the leg, for the full effect), over the long thin twittery jobby on the hoover is quite good too.......I've found I don't have to sellotape a torch to the end of it either, using this handy idea................ "Life...........is just a bowl of tricks!!!!!!"

I use the base off an old mag mount car aerial, good size and very powerful.
