Would you believe it?! I was typing away tihs morning when all of the sudden my Enter key stopped working. No crumbs in the area, backlight normal. Tried some canned air, no change. Can't do paragraphs (for one thing). Phoned Dell, Vaclav asked it I wanted him to send out a new keyboard for me to fit, or an engineer. I said "engineer, please". Later I noticed the Tab key's not working either ............................................................................................................................hope this makes a para ..................................... I was wondering if my light touch and trailing thumbs (touchpad disabled, BTW) could have disabled the keys - like when you hold the Shift key too long you get the Sticky Key message ???

Not that anyone is the slightest bit interested in or sympathetic to my plight > ... but the Dell engineer came today and fitted a new keyboard. I asked him to show me how to remove and replace a key (thinking of my Kettle Chip splinters) and he said that it's not possible, one has to fit a new keyboard. That's re the Alienware M11x models, presumably the bigger sizes too.

You can prise out the keys in a laptop keyboard and there is a technique to it as the snap on metal frame is double hinged.
But in doing so, there is a very big chance of breaking the hinge pins in the keys themselves as they are very thin pieces of plastic going into a metal hinge. One or two keys is manageable but more than that, it's new keyboard time.

Kirsty, I have an old desktop, on it's last legs! BUT, I have a teenage son, so now have a back up laptop, which is apparenty sh*t! I'm just happy that I have a back up. We got DS's new funky purple lappie from comet, good spec, so I'm told, he's had it 6 months now and not complained! Good luck with your purchase

I'd check out Curry's they usually have some decent lappy's around the £300 mark I would strongly advise against £300 laptops from PC World, the majority of colourful doorstops we have acquired because people went against advice and picked up a cheap laptop that died within 6 months (some as little as 6 weeks). They have bloody awful components and really I would ask you that you Paypal the money to charity rather than waste it on one of those. PC World have a great load of excuses as to why it can'y be looked at or fixed under warranty as well, it always seems to be somethig the customer has done...... If you have only £300 then I would go for a desktop, have a look at www.arbico.co.uk they do customized (and prebuilt) and their service is amazing.
