Well I'm off to work today 9-6.30pm shift, our store opened yesterday after a two day closure - quite generous considering other Retailer's Christmas Hours of Business. Next for example opened their doors at 6am I think it was Boxing Day for the start of their Sale. This is an aerial photograph of my nearest large shopping complex, The Mall at Cribbs Causeway yesterday morning: Frankly I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than contemplate going there at most times of the year, let alone over the Christmas/New Year season . . . . . have we as a nation become so obsessed in our quest for a bargain and the desire to shop, that nothing else matters.

I agree Perpetua. My wife didn't have to work Boxing Day, but I did notice Morrisons was open. It is a shame that retailers could not have done the right thing and respected the Christmas Season. I understand there are some roles that need to run 24 hours a day, everyday - but retail is not one of them.

Well I ventured out on boxing day and went down the town to keep my mammy happy luckily we live in a smallish town so there were half a dozen people with the same stupid notion as my mam the only shops open were The factory shop superdrug, M&co, card factory farmfoods and Iceland my entire shopping experience cost me 25p for a pint of milk and only because I really needed a drink So in less than an hour we were home and didn't have to fight our way to a checkout once

I did feel sorry for the poor staff in there striker42 most shops were only open a few hours while Iceland were open from 9am to 6.30pm and there were 3 of us in the shop at around 2pm poor lad was bored senseless. When will the shops realize most people buy enough to last them the best part of 2 weeks with the few things they need fresh every 3-4 days and let their staff have a bleedin break.

Not been into an actual shop in ages. Our local Spar used to shut Xmas Day, while OH worked there, although they tried, but the staff refused. She's left now as have all the other stalwarts, so guess what. They now open 8am-5pm Xmas Day. If people can't get what they need for one day, it is a sad reflection on society. Just GREED pure and simple.

too many of us grew up in the time when shops were closed from lunchtime on xmass eve until the day after new years so we always stock up on stuff for the festive period, I know even when I was younger that the only places open were garages for nearly a week, and even they had short opening hours. I hate shopping, always have done but perhaps weirdly I love going to open air markets and getting to try before you buy I do 90% of my shopping online and have done for a long time, the other 10% is either done at the market or in a second hand shop which is located next to the pub I use for lunch I can also say I have never been shopping anywhere between Christmas eve and the 1st (and then only if the booze was running low) this year I think will be the first time a member of my family has left the house in the last 5 years during that period (one of the teenagers needed to take a Christmas pressie to the shop it came from since it was defective) and despite being a traditional "shopper" she was horrified at the sheer mass of people on boxing day.... I think its a crime so much of our traditional society has been eroded in the constant drive to eradicate our core values and shops like everything else should be closed from the 24th until the 2nd (with the exception being department stores that were always allowed the boxing day sale from 9am until 12 on boxing day) of course that would necessitate all those shops and such to put their staff back on salaries and pay overtime instead of basic hourly wage rates, but then that's how things used to be done back when people were properly paid and looked after by their employers instead of being flogged to death by some corporation chasing the bottom line !

I try and keep every day of the week shopping free and Sunday is a day of rest to recover from the previous six days.
