I know I 'occasionally' go on about footballers wages (is 'wages' even the right word?) and I'm probably being a bit of an hypocrite, as if I was offered mega bucks, in truth I'd probably say 'yes please'. But I like to think I'd handle my wealth and fame differently.

But when you read stories like the one in the link above, you have to despair of such an immense change, especially after reading about certain people such as the 'Sunderland player', can't even bring myself to type his name, and others recently.

I realise it's not just footballers, I've just read about one of Bernie Ecclestone's son-in-laws, a billionaire who drives around London with a fleet of top end motors and bodyguards in tow, has just bought a £3.5 million Lambourghini... I bet the bus still gets there quicker

Raffles the players now are not just seen as commodities to win matches. The top players fulfil a role which is much more important; income.

For example (figures made up by me)

Lionel Messi earns £20 million PA.
Barca earn £20 million in gate receipts.
Barca earn £15 million selling 'Messi' shirts.
Barca earn £45 million from kit suppliers.
Barca earn £10 million TV rights.
Barca earn £200 million in sponsorship.

If Barca don't pay Messi £X then it is doubtfu if he'd still be there. If not, it is arguable if Barca would earn the above money thus not being in a position to be able to afford or attract other top players.

This the downward spiral starts.

Football will never be the same again.

And if that money wasn't going to the players, where would it go? Into the pockets of those already rich enough to own football clubs. Although Barca is a poor example for that point!

I don't begrudge players their salaries, they were fortunate enough to be born in an era where football is a business first and then a sport, that's all. They aren't to blame for all of the TV and sponsorship deals flying around.

Sorry BrenD but I do... although, as you say, the bigger problem is the 'building up' of the commercial sports business, with which I agree in your reasoning but don't believe it is right. I just can't get my head around people paying such stupid fees for 'entrance tickets', 'TV subscriptions', 'club memorabilia' etc etc. Have we all 'dumbed down' to such a level!  God help us if that is the case.

Footballers wages are a drop in the Ocean.

When people who think they do 'fairly normal' jobs can pay 14,000,000 euros for a house and not blink, we truly know the (first) world is a messed up place.

The rich are on a turbo-charged escalator to even more wealth. The plebs support them by being willing participants in the great game of capitalist greed.

Only a revolution or a total collapse of the financial systems will ever put an end to it.

I can't comment on the footballers as such but you do get some good 'uns such as Beckham he has actually out money and time back in with his accademies and there is a lot of charity work he does that isn't publicised
also. other people. I do actually know who are wealthy who do give a large amount back to charity.
however I agree some are just idiots!
