Started on Embassy regal ( well who didn't dip in the old man's packet) then when I started working I moved onto Club king size for a few years. Having moved on to lorry driving for a living, purchasing 10 x 50g pouches of any brand of tobacco was easier than stopping at the shop for a 20 deck and a great deal easier on the pocket. My last 6/7 years smoking, before a heart attack put an end to it, consisted of Drum and liquorice papers. In that time I think I only purchased 2 x 20 decks as they seemed a waste of time compared to a roll up. Funnily enough, I would have and did go without anything, if I, on the odd occasion, was unfortunate enough to run out of liquorice papers. Never bought a packet of conventional white cigarette papers coz they were rank. On reflection, I can now say the whole lot are rank rotten.

I lives in North London for my first 30 years and I smoked Marlbro Red or Winston, increasingly supplemented by rollies as the prices became more an more ridiculous. B&H were the most popular brand at the time.

The standard Red or Green Rizla type papers where (are) incredibly thick; thicker than the nitrate drenched paper on a ready made*. Red Rizlas gave me a headache very quickly. I always used Blue or later Silver Rizlas or the lovely thin OBI ones. I used unbleached hemp ones for a while as well. Actually when I stopped buying them they had all become quite expensive. I used to order about £40 worth at a time at least a couple of times a year. *I still wonder if the stuff in the paper in a ready made is as much a danger as the tobacco.

Started on No 6 and stayed on those then Regal. Never got into Embassy Red. Thwen B&H. Then onto roll ups. Didn't like the taste of GV and got whatever was cheapest.
Funny how fags got bigger. Anyone remember Sovereign? Like matchsticks. Lol

I agree with TJ it's more about money, what you could afford, in the past I have smoked nearly al brands from Park Drive up to Dunhill - all tipped so ignore the untipped ones, at Christmas I used to treat myself to Sobranie Black Russian or the coloured variety Sobranie Cocktail. When the prices started going sky high I looked for the cheapest Superkings that didn't taste like s h i t - think Galoise, Camel etc

My dad smoked B&H gold so that is what i gravitated to.
Even before i smoked i loved the smell of an empty packet of my dad's b&h.
dont think i stood a chance!

I started off on b&h (they were cheaper at the local pub vending machine) moved on to embassy once I was able to legally buy them (about 5 years later) went over to regal (since they were nearly 50p cheaper and basically the same product) went to lamberts again based on price, but I smoked rollies the whole time as well, for some reason most shops would sell a kid baccy for their granddad (old holbourne or golden Virginia) but didn't belive you when you tried ot buy tailor mades lol)
I finished up smoking amber leaf for the last decade I smoked, I never understood people that stuck religiously to a single brand I would switch to whatever was cheapest so long as it wasn't nasty, hell I even smoked goulios and camel for nearly a year
but like everthng tastes change over time as well so that also probably accounts for swapping brands all the time lol

Started with No6, local shop used to sell three fags and two matches?, smoked them until they were discontinued, the occasional pack of dunhills if I was feeling particularly flush, moved onto embassy, and eventually ended up smoking anything I could get cheap, and I mean anything lol

I always remember the predominance of Park Drive when I travelled north of Brum in my youth. However I started on Woodbines, Guards, Strand (you're never alone) and if I was flush I'd treat myself to Senior Service. The one I stuck with most in later years was... which resulted in one of my nicknames at work, cos no-one else had heard of them. Bet you can't guess where my 'user name' came from on this board

Well certainly brand loyalty, but based on price. Loyalty goes out of the window if you cant afford it. But as for the regional aspect, I think this maybe down to income based on regions. I know that being poor is part of the whole country, but some areas are more prone to it than others, such as inner city areas. We were the same as most in our area, No6, No10 and B&H if a bit flush....but Park Drives and Capstan Full Strength were great for the "dimp" stealing from the ashtrays when skint" I should add family ashtrays, not local pubs
