Just got a response from a Bathroom Fitter/Plumber on MyBuilder.com which surprised me as regards charge rates. This is about a 2mtr * 2mtr bathroom that needs re-tiling/new bath...the usual.
I am surprised at this: (this is from his profile and is charge per man)
Standard half-hourly charge £45 (9am – 5pm) weekdays
Evening half-hourly charge £50 (5pm – 8pm) weekdays
Night half-hourly charge £55 (8pm - 12pm) weekdays
Saturday half-hourly charge £50 (9am – 5pm)
Sunday half-hourly charge £55 (5pm – 8pm)
I'm not used to tradesmen charging about £700/day for labour and likely VAT added. I was hoping to employ someone this time instead of my standard DIY approach. I'd say this is a 3 to 4 day job
I would of thought £150/day max for labour? This is South East London (Greenwich).

Think you need to shop around as thats taking the p#ss. I know its not the same but our window fitters earn a max of £150 a day, so £90 and hour to fit bathrooms is having a laugh. Check a trade

Check a trade Thats what I thought @windows. I helped a friend with IT stuff who owned a DG company and its about £150/day for the fitters. This guy's feedback shows a court case under way where the customer thought she was paying for all of a small bathroom fit at £2.5K. The final bill came in at £5.3k. I certainly will be shopping...a lot!

You need a decorator rather than a plumber Jane, best thing is always to ask friends maybe at your church for a recommendation and get at least 2 quotes. Maybe a plumber if the location of the plumbing fittings on the new bath are different, but only for a short time.

calnorth I've just read all those prices out to my 'ol man who refurbishes bathrooms/kitchens etc etc and he burst out laughing. All he charges is 15 euros an hour no matter what time of day or at weekends. The highest charge he's got is a 50 euro call out charge, but for normal everyday fitting of bathrooms etc it is simply 15 euros per hour. He just said "at those charges we need to move back to the UK so as to get rich" haha

I just edited the ad on their website to say include your charges and whether VAT included. P*ss takers everywhere!

That's a joke. £250 a day gets you most things around here. That's a short day mind you. If a job is genuinely 8 or 9 hours you can figure £300, maybe even £350. Asking £100 an hour is crazy. A one off "call" (something that takes half an hour) fair enough. 120 grand a year for doing normal hours? No way.

Midlands, west and north. My dad never goes over £300. He and brother in law develop in surrey. Depends on the skills of course. Certain trades less. I suspect you've been quoted 'agency' rates. They're trying it on. Call out, ok but multiplying 45 x 2 x 7/8 hours is too much.

MP Bit spendy mart166. Whats that for ...all bits, labour and VAT? Time on the mobiles? I had a non Brit sparky(?) try it from N. London. So I asked if something went wrong with his work would he come and fix. Answer was..nothing to go wrong. Yeah right! My concern was the distance and ease of travel etc. Don't answer the question do they? And everything about the rabid application of VAT angers me...very much!
