Well I was making a brew and needed to put fresh batteries in my parallel mod. Pulled old ones out and it ripped the wrapper. Had a look in mod and noticed the tab was snagging on the wrapper. Reached over and grabbed 2 fresh batteries ( paired Sony vtc4 ) and poped them in checking I had bent the tab properly so it doesn't snag. Well it dident snag but idiot here put one battery in upside down. Holy hell do these get hot fast. It was less than 1.5 seconds till I had ripped the batteries out and they were 70°c + smoke pouring from the posi terminal
It goes to show do not get complacent. 99.99% I allways double check the polarity before putting bats in this time I was distracted. The mid thankfully survived but looks like I've destroyed £14 worth of batteries. Please don't be a muppet like me and double check your polarity.
Question these still have 4v in each cell according to multimeter, what's best way to discharge so I can recycle them safely.
Cheers ( the new forum idiot )

Just tape the ends up properly mate and dispose of at an approved recycle point.
Lesson learnt, you'll not do that again I'm sure.
