Have any of you tried these and if so, what are they like?
By the time we buy our groceries, cook them and then sit down to eat them, we have kind of gone off the idea of actually enjoying them. The idea of ordering in a week's worth of main meals and knowing that we can have a completely different meal each day with little or no hassle regarding having to cook all the individual veggies and meats, does have a certain appeal.
They certainly look very appetising in the brochure and to have them delivered to our door, if they taste half as good as they look they would be a winner. Oh and the cost, well we couldn't buy all the ingredients for that price.
So any thoughts, criticism or other wise.

My mum's friend had hers delivered, I can ask her for more details if needs be? but she raved about them!
Mum said that they do 7 main meals and 7 puddings for a set price (which I think was under £30 a week?) and Mum said they were a good size and very healthy. They call with them frozen and you add into your freezer and defrost day before and cook.
My mum in law has COPD and she eats like a bird and cant find the energy or inclination to cook and has lost a stone in 2 months and is hospitalised at present so I plan to take a closer look at this as an option..... I shop for her, but I cant MAKE her eat so I'm considering this too

People who cant go shopping or have the ability to cook would benefit. If your not the id say its a bit on the lazy side....but each to their own

Hi lobeydosser , if you're thinking of the ones that advertise on TV, I had a brochure delivered a couple of years ago, and yes they do look good in the pictures, but compared to supermarket meals they seemed a little expensive. Although I do believe they will be of better quality. Plus how big is your freezer? It obviously depends on your own circumstances... I'm on my own (boo hoo), and have a small fridge/freezer plus I don't know what I want to eat until I want to eat it! Fortunately, I'm still able to jump in the car and get it from my local supermarket. That day is soon approaching when I won't be able to do that, so it's either toast for breakfast, dinner & tea, or pay up and enjoy the benefits of growing old in the UK ? ... I'd better stop now before it gets political! PS I suddenly fancy fish & chips, and that wasn't what I ordered a week ago!

Well I am neither elderly (not quite), disabled or lazy, but we have all been brainwashed into believing that we should have certain types of meals at certain times and going out shopping for all the ingredients necessary to cook these meals would take up more time than the meal was worth.
I have sent away for 2 lots of brochures. One from Wiltshire Farm Foods and the other from Oakhouse Foods. The Wiltshire crowd have alcohol in a lot of their meals so that is no use to us. I have seen Oakhouse vans in this area so I know they deliver down here.
I guess we can only give them a try and see if they suit us. The food will certainly not go to waste and if it works out cheaper than a supermarket delivery, we'll be quids in.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Raffles I have a half empty spare freezer with my nicbase in it so plenty of room for a week of meals for two. <<< PS I suddenly fancy fish & chips, and that wasn't what I ordered a week ago! >>> If we want fish and chips we have to drive 15 miles to our nearest chippy and so the suppers are usually cold by the time we get home.

lobeydosser not tried them out yet, but have been considering for my Mum. Sadly I don't always have the time to make home cooked meals for her, although my brother does sometimes. I will follow this thread with interest.

No offence taken thebishman Hi taz96 the missus and I went through the Oakhouse brochure this evening and decided to try one of their 7 day meal packs. Unfortunately they only deliver once a fortnight, but what the heck, I think that after a week we will have a better idea of taste and portion sizes. I suppose if I lived within easy reach of a large supermarket or better still, a farmers market, then we would be more inclined to shop locally, but there are certain things we had to compromise on to live in a quiet little village and whilst it may cost us more to have our food delivered, the lifestyle we enjoy far outweighs this extra cost.

I sampled some of the Wiltshire Farm meals a few years ago and they were very nice. Not tried the Oakhouse ones, but if they are anything like the Wiltshire Farm ones they should be nice. The portion sizes were also good, especially if you normally eat two courses, such as a main and a pudding. I recall having apple crumble and it was very nice.

I love home cooked food, I just don't have enough time to do it for two households and work full time. Also, my Mum wouldn't like what I like so could be a convenient solution. lobeydosser I look forward to hearing how you get on with it. Bobsbeer Helpful info thank you.

hm - obviously you don't like cooking nothing can beat home cooked food as you know exactly what is in it , there can be loads of sugar or other unwanted ingredients in ready made meals I believe that is why gawd gave us eyes, so that we can read the ingredients lists and decide for ourselves which meals will suit us and which to avoid.
As for not liking to cook. That's a larf. We not only cook our own, but we grow our own veggies.
These meals are a way of trying something different and by doing so, expanding our horizon on the food front.
We were both brought up by parents who went through the rationing of WW2 and while the foods we got as children was good and wholesome, it was a bit boring. It's Monday, it must be Mutton. It's Wednesday it must be Mince. Its Friday it must be Fish and so on.
Today the world is your oyster as far as food choices are concerned and we intend to try as many different foods as we can afford.
People just love to Pigeon Hole others by presuming that just because they are doing something that they wouldn't do, then they must be X, Y, Z. We have a number of reasons why we are trying these foods, some of which others may understand and some which we will keep to ourselves.
Safe to say that we are thoroughly looking forward to our first delivery of food packs next Monday.

Getting back to Clivia comments on ready meals, these comments are precisely the reasons that we do not eat in restaurants. You just do not know what has been added to your meals or what has been carried over from any meal that has been cooked in the pans before your food is cooked. Restaurants do not supply you with Ingredients Lists. Between medications and other things, we have to be super careful about ingredients of any foods we eat, but we have been doing this for a long time and such research is now second nature. We live not far from a large Residential Caravan park and it has 50 Park Homes on it, mostly occupied with folks that are ages with ourselves. It turns out that many of them also get these home delivered meals and have been doing so for many years. So we are glad we picked the firm we did.
