Bit of advice on rebuilds, recommend things to buy,

Hi all,

I have been vaping for three years now, Most people by now would have already had a go at doing this but i never have.

I would like to buy a tank that i can re-coil and re-wick myself, So i'm looking for recommendations off you fine people.

I would also like to buy some cotton, wire, A wire jig and some pre made coils for it too. I want the pre-made coils to use to get me started for use while i get to know how to make my own. 
I don't want to spend a vast amount of money so i'm thinking links for fastech would be good as i know that you can pick some good stuff up off them for a very good price. 
I also don't mind buying secondhand.

I'm use to using the aspire nautalus  , Don't think i have spelt that correct ! Its the old 5ml one one. I have also been using the aspire K1 and K3 too.

The vw mod i'm useing at the moment is the smok OSUB TC80W .

i'm not bothered about making clouds, More MTL sort of vaper

All of those you are curently using are eminently rebuildable - just google for rebuild videos.
Never bin your old coils!
The Aspire BVC coils (in the K1) are easier to rebuild as single horizontal coils.
Plenty of nautilus head rebuild videos around too.
I don't know much about pre-made coils (apart from they come with nasty silica wicks that are a pain to trim).
Wire - start with 0.255mm (30AWG) kanthal.
You can use a micro screwdriver set for a jig, or a cheap Kuro coiler from FT.
Research, practice and perseverance are the key (oh and glasses and a magnifying glass) .
Once you get the hang of it you will start to hate paying £2-£3 for a factory coil head.
Also note that often the coil is fine and it is only the cotton that needs to be replaced after dry burning the naked coil (much easier with horizontal coils).

Would a Kayfun Lite clone from Fastech suit you as a good starting tank for learning to rebuild halight ? You seem to have similar vape needs/style as me, and although they're not the latest and greatest things going, they are fantastic (imo) for MTL lowish watts vaping. They are dead easy to learn to coil on and there are so many vids on you tube to help you. I make simple 1.5 - 1.6 ohm coils using 28 gauge kanthal, wound around 2.5 mm rod.

The good thing about KFL's is there are so many mix and match parts available on FT that you can build yourself new ones really cheaply. I think I have about 7 on the go at the moment

Thank you for the reply and the link to the kayfun. I will check that one out. The good thing is i have read about people using those ! So its not a new name to get my head around. There is so much stuff on the market now its easy to get lost in it all !

No worries And yep it's very easy to get lost in it all - I tend to feel out of my depth these days as well. You only have to blink and the vape scene has moved on another few light years

I resisted winding coils for a long time too. Don't sweat it!

What they all said earlier.... ^^^

You can make coil winding as easy or complex as you like. My first attempts were done using just a loose drill bit which worked but was a little fiddly. One of those coil jigs like the Kuro or Coil Master make it easy and are readily available from places like Fasttech and are not overly expensive.

You'll need some wire - I'd suggest one shortish spool each of 26 and 28 gauge Kanthal to start. That'll provide you with a good starting choice for "safe and easy" coils on most rebuildabe atties.

Some talk about Ohm Meters ... but near any regulated mod will allow you to see the resistance of your coil without firing, so it isn't critical to buy one to get started.

Bookmark the link to the Steam Engine calculator here: Steam Engine which will help greatly with basic settings and configurations for coils. But I'd suggest you start with simple contact coils - something like 8 wraps of 28 gauge around a 2.5 mm drill bit which will give a nice safe and easy to manage 1.5 ohms or so.... and that will handle 12 to 18 watts without too much bother. Then take it from there as you learn and find what you like.

Cotton - I like bulk packs of cotton pads from FT. Muji or Puff - whatever is going today. Easy to cut straight strips for easy consistant thickness wicks. Others prefer different materials citing different advantages - but simple cotton pads are a good way to start. Wicking is the thing I found most difficult to get "just so". It sometimes seems to be equal parts skill, art, luck and black magic to get it exactly right, but isn't that hard to get a decent vape.

Hit youtube for videos on simple coil making..... there are a bunch. The first time or two will be filled with a little trepidation, but it'll become easier very quickly. AND it's a revelation when you take your first toke from an atty that you coiled and wicked for yourself.

If you are looking for really excellent and cheap cotton wick you can't go wrong with this link. I bought a pack in August 2015 and am not yet half way through (and I have a lot of attys to wick!). Have tried all the expensive makes but I find this the best.
