Hi Postmodern Smoking I will tell the Diabetic Team about what happened. They are in a much better position to sweep it under the carpet.I’d complain far and wide Hi Greg, I actually said that they were in a far better position to do something about it.
While this doctor has made a mistake, albeit one that has made me rather ill, I will not be complaining "far and wide". I will report it to the appropriate team and they will deal with it.
I have complete trust in my Diabetic Team who have looked after me for 7 years now. However, any further "suggestions" from our doctors will be run past the Diabetic Team before I take any actions.

I have now been in contact with my Diabetic Team and the practise of NOT doing self metering is a NHS directive. Whether this is a Scotland only thing or a National one, I know not.
The team's instructions are now that if I feel that my blood/sugar is too high, I have to attend my surgery and see the doctor. How I am supposed to know that my B/S is too high without metering myself, they couldn't answer me. The fact that I have other problems that may also hide any variation with my B/S Levels is tough titties as far as they are concerned.
The only Diabetic patients that are allowed to get blood monitoring equipment on prescription are those that take other blood reducing drugs.
Fortunately and thanks to the Internet, I can buy the necessary metering strips at about £25 for a box of 50. So even if our "caring and sharing" NHS do not give a toss for my health, £25 a month to make sure that I never again suffer the way I have in the past 4 months is a small price to pay.

Bloody hell !!!!! I presume you are type 2 ????? wish i had known this a week ago as i just threw out a test meter and around 50 pks of test strips as i was given a new set up on the NHS I really think that is out of order not giving you a meter and strips to test yourself.

Yes @dozerman I am type 2. What annoys me is that my Mrs, also type 2 will continue to receive her test strips etc because she is on other Blood Reducing medication. In the meantime, I have "borrowed" a box from her which I will need to replace. It she can wait until March, I'll buy her a box for her Birthday. Generosity is my middle name!!!!

Well if she can get them on script can she just not get them a bit more often ???? to save you buying them Ok i can just put in a script as and when needed is it not the same up your way ??? i would just say she has been feeling a bit rough lately so has been testing a lot more often ( if asked).

Hi @dozerman I am at 13mmol today and I hope to be back within range by the time I have used up the box of strips I have borrowed.
I will buy 2 or 3 boxes, replace the borrowed box and then just use a test strip perhaps once or twice a week just to keep me inline.
I do like my Co-op Curries and other "non-diabetic" foods, so it is best that I monitor my bloods regularly.
However we have both being on monitoring for a while now and I'm sure the docs would notice if we started using more than normal. Thanks to the SNP, doctors and other health services are being squeezed to save every penny they can and how long we can continue to receive "free health care" is in the lap of the gods.

Its totally unbelievable that you should have to pay for them. I really would have thought if you was diagnosed then you would get them on script as surely if you test yourself you can keep your levels better / stable and by doing that it would mean less trips to the doc's and in turn save them money in the long run. I have used a box / pk of 50 over xmas no way could i pay 25 quid for a pk of them i quite often test 6 times a day.

I don't believe it either @dozerman but the docs and the diabetic team have been told not to issue any more prescriptions for test meter strips.
Why, I don't know. It does seem crazy to me that those in authority would rather see people ill and possibly hospitalised rather than spend a few quid on a box of plastic strips.
But Hi Ho, we live in a crazy world where we are governed by those who would be more useful empty our Bins.
