Our ability to communicate is taken for granted and we only consider it when we lose it one way or another. Your experience is a timely reminder to us of a certain age to take more care of our health etc. Glad to hear there has been a marked improvement over the last few months.

Hi sydsut I wish it was just "us of a certain age " but in the Stroke Ward there was a chap opposite to me who was between 20 and 25 years of age. Having said that, he had been in longer than me and he was still there when I left. So clearly his Stroke had been more serious than mine. So, once I was able to recognise what was happening around me, I got the impression that they are treating all ages and severity although the majority did appear to be "of our certain age". Although a Stroke of that type outwardly appears to affect the Brain/Speech, is also affects other Brain functions although outwardly these are not noticeable to others. Balance and my ability to walk any distance is affected. There are possibly other functions that are controlled by that section that are also affected, but so far, I have not recognised them yet. But the Speech problems do tend to steer you away from social functions and it could lead to you becoming a sort of recluse. I guess only time and my ability to recognise where I am going wrong, will get me back to as near normal as before. However, Mrs Lobey's idea of my "near normal" and mine lie a fair distance apart!!!!!!

It is 6 months now since I have posted on this Stroke business, but after events, I think it is about time I brought you up to date. Stroke wise, I am coping although when I get down, usually by evening time, my speech becomes difficult and I loose concentration. However, far worse was to come and I have only just found out that over the past 6 months I have become very ill indeed. I was at the doctor last June and when he realised that I was Diabetic and that I was metering my Blood/Sugar Levels, he said that I was to stop doing this because I had been doing so for a long time and that my levels no longer needed monitoring. This was the first time I had visited this guy as he us a new doctor to the Surgery. I naturally presumed that some new directive had come out in relationship to B/S Monitoring. So I stopped doing my B/S Monitoring and carried on with life. When the effects of the Stroke, my bad speech and the increasing inability to do the simplest of tasks continued to get worse, I blamed it all on the Stroke. Then, 3 days before Christmas, I was so bad that it reminded me of the time when I took Diabetic Poisoning and ended up in hospital on a drip and kept in for a week. Realising that what was happening possibly had nothing to do with the Stroke but something to do with my Blood/Sugar Level, I dug out my old Meter, put new batteries in it and checked my B/S Level. It was off the scale!!!!! No wonder I had no energy, was as high as a kite, peeing 24/7 and had a host of other ailments that I have not had in years. Only time will tell if I can get back to my normal, controlled blood/sugar level and whether I have done any permanent damage. I cannot help wondering how much better I would be feeling now if this B/S thing had not happened. 4 days ago my B/S Level was 26.1mmol. Today it was down to 15mmol. So if you are looking for a left over Christmas Dinner, don't come to our house. You're more likely get offered Bred & water!!!!

Thanks @dozerman I went from 15 to 22 over today so coming down, albeit slowly.
I have cut out all sugars, switched my drinks to bottled water and generally being very careful.
But this situation didn't happen overnight and I expect it will take a while to get back to what it should be. I just wish it would hurry up!!!

I know this might sound like a daft question @dozerman but does the amount of e-juice change when your mmol goes up and down.
I normally get through about 2.1ml of juice a day, but recently that has halved. Another sign that something was wrong.

Thats the only worry if its been high for a long time that can lead to problems in the long term. But hopefully now you and your doctor are now aware of the problem it can be monitored and, acted on accordingly to get you back to a controllable level. It does take time for my levels to stabilise and they will bonce about a bit for a week or two after a major high. Never noticed any difference in my vaping habits due to blood sugar levels TBH But if they are high i certainly notice that vaping dry's my throat out more so than when my levels are normal.

Actually I have not been to the doctor. The doctor is the one that has caused all this and so I am determined to try to sort this all out by getting myself back to a respectable B/S Level and then see the Diabetic Sister to have it out with her.
My B/S Level was 15 this morning, so we are getting there. Another 10mmol, first thing in the morning and I will be happy.
I don't feel as if I have done any permanent damage, but I will still have to be very careful from here on in.
I am very annoyed that the doctor gave me such stupid advice and the problems that it has caused me, especially at this time of year. However, I will not say anything to the surgery about it, but leave it to the Diabetic Clinic to sort out.
Thanks @dozerman for your answers. They were most helpful.

No problem but i would advise booking a appointment with your diabetic unit for a quick once over with them. I'm running at 18 ATM but thats down to xmas and not really doing much work for a week or so , Once i get back to work they will drop quick. I can just inject extra insulin to pull them down quick but by doing that if for any reason i do have to do something then i will be too low in a very short space of time.

The MOD made me an offer I couldn't refuse when I turned 50 and I haven't worked since. That was 21 years ago. Retirement is Hell, NOT!!!!
It will be into the New Year before I can contact the Diabetic Team. We live out in the sticks and so we share the team with other areas.
With my B/S at 15 this morning, after my usual food intake, it was 14.1 this evening, it is still coming down and tonight I am feeling better than I have in months. However as soon as I can get an appointment with the team, I will.

Thanks @dozerman for your answers. They were most helpful. IMHO you should say something to the doctor at the surgery ... lest they will not learn an important lesson and risk making the same possible mistake with their next patient!

Hi Postmodern Smoking I will tell the Diabetic Team about what happened. They are in a much better position to do something about it. IE, They have much more "clout" than myself, a mere patient.

Hi Postmodern Smoking I will tell the Diabetic Team about what happened. They are in a much better position to sweep it under the carpet.I’d complain far and wide
