I've a batch of bottles, that smell very much of their last contents, I don't want to have to smell and refill to match, is there anything they can be soaked in that will remove smell? and don't say vodka!! I'd rather buy new than waste a good drink! They are 100 ml twist top bottles so they are valuable to me. Also I've been given 20+ dark brown plastic bottles 125 ml with good child resistant lids, they have been washed out but I can still smell raspberry and I'd love to use them for my small quantities of 7.2mg nicotine, so I can have one bottle defrosted at a time. Is there a way to sterilise and smell remove to use them? Obviously I dont want to endanger a litre plus of valuable nicotine so its a quandary

You could try Bicarbonate of Soda or unflavoured denture tablets Pep . . . . . giving them a good long soak, I've had mixed results doing this. But it's worth a go.

Good old thin bleach will do it. They will need a very good rinse with water, but the smell will be gone. I use thin bleach all the time with my brewing, and sanitising fermenting vessels. Works a treat. Just remember to rinse well. Don't use thick bleach, it's a pain in the rear to rinse. Get a bottle of thin for 25p or so if you haven't got any.

BobsbeerWhere do get the idea that fik bleach is hard to rinse? I've used it for cleaning my brewing tuns for years! Jim

Never liked thick bleach, as I find it takes ages to rinse. Also it seems to foam, or at least the stuff from Aldi does. I'm sure they both do the same thing, but thick seems harder to rinse away.

I'm with Bobsbeer on this one jevans, thin bleach is a Sodium Hypochlorite solution, thick bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite with other stuff added which makes it more persistent/harder to wash away in the toilet. Good for toilets, less good/more effort required for equipment rinsing. So as far as disinfecting/oxidising properties they are the same (for the same strengths), thick will require more effort to get rid of entirely when rinsing.

How dilute do I use it..I assume I can leave bottles in soak but not neat? The stronger that you use it the faster that it will do it's work. I'd use a very approx./generous 10ml bleach per litre of water and leave to soak for 24 hours.

I use bicarbonate soda If I'm in a lazy mood, hot water and denture tabs. Then leave over night or until I get reminded of what's in the kitchen El cheapo denture tabs from B&M stores etc, work for me
