Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Matthew Macfadyen... Ian McShane was wonderful in Deadwood, and I really like RS and MM too. Then there's Donald Sutherland A feast of male tottie, in the acting sense Fingers crossed they won't have Brooksided it scylla

Thanks Hanow!
I have to confess I haven't read Ken Follett. I used to read loads but not for a couple of years, not since The Thingummies of Inspector Whatsit (that Victorian murder analysis, very good it was too).

Well, Raggy, have you watched it yet? I have. I thought the early part was rather soapy in quality of dialogue, acting and some of the casting, and I didn't think it had the gravitas to carry off a female exposing herself and peeing on a table I somehow think the book must be better, but the TV prog is a great hit on the forums. A long time ago I read a wonderful novel about a stonemason from around the same era but it definitely wasn't this one. Wish I could remember what it was called or the author. Ken Follett was on the radio the other day discussing Pillars and his new book. scylla

Scylla - that was probably Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd - a novel about Salisbury from the year dot to present day. A big chunk of it was about the building of the cathedral.

I actually enjoyed the first episode - I noted "Lovejoy" using some of the "Deadwood" language

not that impressed up to now. It's very difficult when you've read the book. I was so disappointed with The Mosquito Coast movie, Paul Theroux's brilliantly written book had completely engrossed and moved me, though it went a bit haywire towards the end, IMO. But I do think that TV Pillars could do with a more adult interpretation (not adult in the X-rated sense) whether one's read the book or not. scylla

Hvae to say, have never read the book, so not able to accurately compare and contrast. But, have to say I enjoyed the first episode.

i have now watched the rest of episode 1 and episode 2. im now finding it very good, not as good as the book, but having read the book you know its going to get better and better. personally i dont know why they have to put in the sexual scenes or the gory bits at all, if your old enough you know the score, kids would really enjoy this story, but the head and hands chopping and some of the sex dont really need to there imo.
