The top two messages ^^^^^^^are what Chrissie and I wrote yesterday.
I do realise it is part of AVG Chrissie but I have been advised by their help forums to do things that would get rid of it, which I did. It went away for a while.
It came back when I came in here yesterday.
It has just done it again when I posted in here - I clicked to send the 'report error' request and at the moment it is okay. It may just be co-incidence but I've had no other problem today till now.
Are there any techies in here that can give me more advice - in numpty language please.
If not, I will go back to the AVG forums and see what to do again. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr Cheers MM

It might sort it if you uninstall AVG, then install it again, in case some of the files have been corrupted...it shouldn't be making you crash... either that, or uninstall then try the Avast Chrissie mentioned..

I've just been having a look on the AVG forums & elsewhere. Looks like it was a problem with AVG version 8.5 but not with the latest version 9.0. Which version do you have MM?
Edit to correct version 9.5 to 9.0.

Chrissie, I have 8.5 but I thought I had upgraded last week. Obviously not. I will go and do so now. Thanks for looking. Back later. MM

I would uninstall AVG, I agree it's rather 'heavy'. It's not supposed to need a removal tool like Norton does, you can do it in Control Panel, but I use free Revo Uninstaller, which uses the Control Panel uninstall and then shows you any leftover files so you can remove them manually. download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html?tag=mncol;1Re uninstalling AVG: "If you're not reinstalling AVG, click the "Remove User Settings" and "Including Items in the Virus Vault" checkboxes in the AVG uninstaller window and click "Yes." Close any running programs you're prompted to close, such as Internet Explorer, then click "Next." After AVG is finished uninstalling, restart your computer by clicking "OK."Apparently that should remove AVG completely. I used Avast until I came across Microsoft's own, fairly new, free anti-virus: it is so unintrusive, keeps itself up-to-date without even notifying you with popups - even Grumpy-Cook is installing it on his customers' PCs. www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/I like to use the Registry Cleaner of Advanced System Care (free) occasionally, it picks up leftover files: download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html?tag=mncol;2That program is also recommended by eBay techies and CNet is a trustworthy site for downloads. scylla x

Sorry, I didn't get back last night but it took me so long uninstalling and getting rid of all the 'bits'. Then I tried to install the latest version - which also took a long time. Saved it.
Now I can't find where it is!!! I've used AVG free for many years and always found it okay until now.
I have other security as well and always use CCleaner every night when I shut down.
Anyway, I will have another look around and see if I can find the newly installed AVG - if not, I will try some of the links up there.
Thanks Scylll for your info. MM

MM - as you will appreciate, I don't understand any of this stuff. But, that said, Red-bay on ebay - who those of us who know him, trust him - also suggested to me to use Avast (as has been recommended above by others.) My new lappy came with free McAffee, which is about to expire, and when it does, I shall install Avast. It is apparently free - which is always good! xx

What a nuisance PC software can be, grrr If you have CCleaner, Madam, you shouldn't need Advanced System Care - I have just installed the latest CC but haven't used it yet, I have found ASC simple to use - suits me Nothing can replace anti-virus, please install ASA-humanly-P !!! I understand that you've used AVG for years (I get fond of inanimate objects, too ), but try the Microsoft one - it really honestly is better. Then you won't have to keep looking for the AVG setup. What browser do you use? Please don't let it be Internet Explorer because I've just looked up how to find downloads or change the folder where they're stored and it's complicated compared to Firefox or Opera or Chrome. scylla

MM, it sounds to me like there is something going wrong as usually downloading & installing an antivirus should only take a couple of minutes.

MM, I used to have AVG several years ago and it was good but it started to misbehave in a similar fashion to yours so I got rid and down loaded Avast's free version.
I do think Avast is a good anti virus program.
Ken.

Hi All, finally I have installed AVG 2011, so I will give it a try again. I have run it for full checks of everything and all is okay. I also use SuperAnti-Spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy and have done full checks with them as well. All okay. Plus CCleaner on every shut down. Kenny, AVG themselves said they have not been as good as the should've and have put things right - we will see!! I have been using all of these for many years so am familar with them but I am not adverse to change. I will keep Avast in mind and Scyll's other suggestions. Scyll not sure what you mean by 'won't have to keep looking for the AVG set-up' It was my own fault yesterday - not doing things properly. They are all now sitting safely in my System Tray (bottom right-hand side) all ready for a click when I want them. Hi Hanow, I was going to shout for RED if I couldn't sort things out. Trouble is I've not been as meticulous as I used to be - taken things for granted. Thanks to all of you. MM
