Nicotine isn't addictive. It's habit-forming, like caffeine and other mild stimulants, but in laboratory tests it's proved all but impossible to get rats or monkeys addicted to nicotine. Most of the addiction involved in smoking comes from other tobacco alkoids which act in the same way as MAOI anti-depressants, together with the psychological effects of routine action.
