I spent a lovely afternoon (well, an hour of it) in our field, picking gorse flowers. The intention is to make gorse wine, having had some success with elderflower, rose petal, orange blossom and blackberry a few months ago (am drinking the elderflower as I type, it's the last of last year's - got the blackberry lined up for the next glass, may soon be incoherent). Just wondered if anyone else is taking advantage of the gorse season? It's really easy (once you get the flower picking technique right - I only bled twice today!). You need about 2 litres of gorse flowers (that's 2 litres packed loosely, but if you have more, all the better - more flavour), a bag (a kg) of sugar, the zest and juice of a lemon, a handful of sultanas or raisins, an optional 100ml of white grape juice or concentrate (from a home brewing shop), 1 tsp yeast nutrient (ditto), and some white wine yeast (ditto) Give the flowers a bit of a wash in a sieve, them put them in a big pot with a gallon of water and the sultanas. Bring to the boil, simmer for 15 mins, take off the heat, add the sugar and stir until it's dissolved. Cool it a bit, then add the lemon zest and juice, the grape juice/concentrate, if using, and the yeast nutrient. Cool to room temperature, add the yeast, cover and leave for 4 days. Strain through a sieve and funnel into a demijohn, fit a bubble lock, and leave for a month. Rack into a second demijohn (racking means siphoning the liquid off the sediment (the lees), put the bubble lock back on, and leave until cleared before bottling (or not, in my case, very few of my wines make it into a bottle). In other foraging news, the wild garlic is great this year, loads of it about (also known as ramsons). It's wonderful in an omelette with a bit of cheese, and can be frozen for use later in the year. All of it is edible, from the leaves to the stems to the flowers - can make a pretty addition to a salad. If you're near the sea, samphire should be around now too (not had a chance to look myself). My husband has taken to calling me The Witch after I spent 2 hours today mixing juices (12 x 10 ml, all different) followed by the gorse picking and brewing At least, I think that's why he's calling me it...

You might get on well with any of the Pipe Sauce juices - Longbottom Leaf, Oak Barrel Cider, Kentucky Blueberry, Georgia Peach, Grandpa's Cough Medicine and Shire Malt They all seem to have a deep, almost sticky background flavour that I wouldn't call tobacco, but it's in that flavour area. The Oak Barrel Cider in particular has a nice sharp top note. Archangel Vapours (based in Malta so it takes a while for stuff to arrive) do sample packs at a very reasonable price - might be worth a try?

Glad it got there ok fizzygirl Have just spent two hours mixing - have hidden the results away in a cupboard to steep, all 120 ml of it...and the kitchen smells like a cross between a café and a perfumery

Beautiful day here in Ireland, been sitting outside with the dogs all day, soaking up the sun, vaping away with a few vodka and Diet Cokes. Us unemployed people have it hard, you know

Yep, a few weeks ago when I had a cold, and developed a cough - vaping was almost impossible, because it set the cough off, but smoking didn't - which I found really odd. Back to vaping again now - I really didn't enjoy smoking at all, and also found that I'd forget to smoke the cigs after I'd lit them, having got into the habit of puffing less often and 'harder' (if you see what I mean) when vaping. Smoking just tastes and smells horrible to me now.

I have found that diet 7-up works to clear my mouth out, or a strong black coffee

This is so stupid - it's like banning people from drinking soft drinks in public because they may resemble alcoholic drinks. I'm becoming more and more convinced that governments are running scared about the possible loss of tax revenue when people switch from cigarettes to vaping (because it works) - that and lobbyists from the tobacco and NRT industries using their influence to spread misinformation. My local pub is happy for me to vape in it, other customers have never complained, just some have shown an interest - especially the smokers. Just heard about another convert (that makes 3, including my husband) who is going to give it a go thanks to me waffling on about it/being seen to do it. If we hide vaping away, we're hiding it from the very people who would benefit most from making the change from smoking. I think there should be more vaping in public, not less.

I would *love* to find a Gandalf style pipe before next January (husband's 50th) - I mean a really long thin stemmed pipe as in Lord of the Rings. If anyone knows of anyone who sells or could make one, I would be forever grateful (and it'll probably take me until Jan to save up for it!)

Apologies - only got around to mixing this today, and am on my way home to Ireland tomorrow, so will send from there - got entangled in sorting out social services for Dad, but am happy to report he gets a daily carer visit starting at 7.30 am tomorrow (eek!). Anyway, juice mixed, smells rather nice (did 10ml for myself at the same time) so it'll be in the post later this week

Awww, suspected it would happen when I was back in Ireland, and it is - not in the UK until the 21st, but will be thinking of you all!

OK, it was difficult to choose a winner, but I'm going for the one I hadn't thought of, or tried - which is fizzygirl and jasmine, rose, and passionfruit PM me your address, and I'll mix it later today and get it sent off to you this week (will probably need steeping!). Thanks so much for all the ideas, there's enough there to keep me going a while, plus the link to Romelee's guide is invaluable! I haven't tasted Ylang Ylang yet, but it smells like a crystal/hippie shop - I've got some 15% RY4 5% Ylang Ylang steeping right now, so should be able to tell you more about the taste later this week. Thanks again all - this mixing thing is such fun!

I need inspiration - I'm new to mixing, and have been experimenting with flavour combinations - some successful, some less so. I thought I'd ask you lot - and give you a little motivation too - to suggest blends I could make from the flavours I have. List to follow, and the one I like the best I will make and send a 10ml bottle to the person who suggests it (please be in Ireland or the UK, can't afford foreign postage). It'll be a 50/50 PG/VG mix at about 15 mg (80% of 18mg, whatever that works out to!). Closing time for contest is midnight Sunday 12th May, I'll pick a winner on Monday when I get up:) No guarantees that your suggestion will taste good, of course, and I'll try to use sensible ratios of the flavours!
So - here's what I have - do your worst!
Coffee Chocolate Caramel Madagsacar Vanilla Two apples Maple syrup Maple (natural) Pie crust Ethyl Malitol Lemon Meringue Pie DK Tobacco RY4 Double Jasmine Lychee Passionfruit Ylang Ylang Rose Hazelnut

I've just mixed up some Maple Syrup, Hazelnut and Pie Crust - not really sure what I'm aiming for, but it could be interesting. I've got 20 needle bottles on order via eBay, cos I ran out too. Hopefully I'll be able to vape without coughing by the time the new mix has steeped!
