Hi all I'm Gilly, been smoking for about 33 years but I'm not a heavy smoker - I used to smoke about 15 a day but for a few years now I've managed to keep it down to under 10 a day. However, contrary to what some people think, just because I smoke 'only' 9 a day doesn't mean it's easy to give up - it isn't. I've tried giving up a couple of times, the last time, about 4 years ago, I managed for 12 weeks but the whole time I never felt like a non-smoker or an ex-smoker, just like a smoker who wasn't smoking at the moment. When my mum was suddenly taken into hospital I started smoking again, but if I'm honest I'd been waiting for that excuse for the whole of the 12 weeks! I really fancy trying e-cigs and I've been reading through this forum and the MSE one for advice. Trouble is every time someone suggests one I follow the link and think, yes, this sounds good, then I follow another link and like the look of that one too and I end up more confused than when I started! My first instinct was to say that I want one that's exactly like a real cig, but as some have pointed out, not so many of them are now. However, I do think I would prefer a small light one as it would feel more 'natural', at least to start with. I currently smoke Sterling Blue Superkings i.e. low tar - they are 0.6 mg nicotine per cig and I'm on 9 a day at the moment. Would the 510 be better for me than the 901, do you think? I know it will take longer for me to see much money saving as I'm a lightish smoker but I might smell nicer! And even as a light smoker I get very short of breath sometimes - that was what prompted me to give up 4 years ago but the addiction proved too much! Hope you aren't all bored answering the same old questions! cheers Gilly

Hi Gilly, welcome!!! Go for it...doesn't matter if you get a 901 or 510, there are fans of both....if money isn't tight, get both, you can always give one away to a friend who'd like to try them...? personally, i prefer the 901, but whichever you choose, just do it, i bet you'll love it... Vapour Station is a good place to start, their prices are very good, even if their bottles are rubbish... discount code UKVAPERS will get you 5% discount

Hi Gilly
The 901 is a great beginners device not tried the 510 but it is definately popular. As you only smoke 9 cigarettes a day I think the larger battery devices would be a bit ott for your needs.
As Lilac said just buy one and start.

Hello & welcome Gilly It really so difficult to say which is the better between the 510 & 901. I'm also a 901 fan but many do prefer the 510. As Lilac says, Vapor station's starter kits are a great price as you get extras to other standard starter kits. Do remember though that the carts you get with their kits are blanks so you will have to buy some e-liquid to fill them with straight away. But you can get 10ml bottles from them for only £3.95 www.vaporstation.co.uk/index.php

Hello Gilly, I bought the dse 901 and am still happy with it. Tomorrow will be 6 weeks tobacco free for me...... Sometimes it's not easy to stay off the cigs, but the ecig has helped tremendously and I'm managing better than I ever thought possible. P.S. - I've cut right down on the use of the ecig, too.

Thanks Chrissie, But most of the credit has to go to the 901 and this forum. If I hadn't asked on here and been helped with what to buy, I'd have had no idea where to start.....

Thanks for your encouragement. Another question - is a manual or automatic battery better for beginner? I'm not sure I really understand the difference ???

'Tis true - I found the other forum, but it's too big for me; can't be bothered to navigate to find the info. I'm after. Besides, this forum speaks the same language as me....

Gilly, Now this is why I don't post on here very often - I have no idea what the difference is or which is best - I myself use a manual.

Gilly the difference between them is : Automatic battery activates when you drag on the mouth piece so automatically heats up the atomiser. Advantage being you just need to drag & no button needs pressing. However, the auto battery also has an auto cut off which can be very annoying. Plus you need to do what is known as a primer drag to get it to heat up the atty. The manual battery has a button you need to press to activate it. This can be especially useful as it means you can heat up your atomiser for a second or 2 before taking a drag & this will give you more vapour on your first drag by doing so. It's also useful to press the button to heat up your atomisers without a mouthpiece on to burn off the crud that gathers around the "element" inside the atty. And another advantage is there is no auto cut off. The main disadvantage being that the button could be pressed while for instance it is in your pocket. Lol, I bet someone else could have explained the above so much better

No, that's really helpful, Chrissie - I saw some grumbles on another forum about the auto shut off but didn't realise what it was referring to. You sort of assume auto would be better for a new e-smoker (sorry - vaper) but from what you say I think manual sounds better to me. I must stop dithering and buy one - I think I've decided on the 901 (then again the 510 sounds good . . .) Oh rats, I'm off to have a fag cheers Gilly

Gilly, go for one of the vapor station kits, they come with a mix of auto & manual batteries.
