Yes Frogster,I have just purchased one of these from Amazon,a great little tool for less than £3.00 including postage.Very handy for those who like to recoil and soldering very small items.A very well made piece of kit that is fully adjustable.I am very well pleased with mine. Do you have a link?

I did indeed buy one of the hands-free magnifying thingies.
In fact, I simply would`nt be able to do any of that small fiddly work without it. I wear glasses all the time now, and although they are good for TV, Reading, computer etc. They just dont help much at the microscopic work that rebuilding entails.
Great walkthrough there Des. So much easier for anyone new to rebuilding to understand when its done with pictures and the written word.
Well done Sire..... #icon_welldone# #icon_welldone#

Nice walk through....i managed to do exactly the same thing with a bunch of old vision and nova heads the other day - really easy, managed to do about ten of them, and they're all working fine
and now i've just done my first wick n coil for the vh genesis and it's working lovely
now i feel like i've joined the man's club for some reason
thanks for taking the time, des.

Wish I had seen this thread earlier, I have just spent the afternoon trying to recoil my nova's. I had readings from 0.2 0.9.9.9 0.3 and 1.0, Only got the wire and wick this morning and now the wick is nearly all gone after it shredding. I think I could of put it to better use by hanging myself. The parts are fidgety and when you insert the wires down the post, the wires go everywhere except down and as for the wick, it shreds for me and laughs. Look like I will have to buy a magnifying glass too. great idea Des. it looks so easy watching vid after vid on you tube. I use to be good doing delicate wiring but age has got the better of me and I am only 45. time for a swim in the Mersey.

Fortunately, people are prepared to do it for you and sell them to you for £3 or so and they last for weeks. Being able to to recoil one doesn't really mean your is any bigger

I use to be good doing delicate wiring but age has got the better of me and I am only 45. time for a swim in the Mersey. Well I'm older than you! Good light and the correct glasses (if you wear them) are essential. Your low readings suggest one of the legs is shorting to the outside of the tube. Wind your coil so it is not as wide as the tube, ideally with a mm or 2 to spare either side. I like to use 3mm wick as it's less faff than folding smaller diameter wick to the required thickness. 4mm wick should work as well. The more you do the easier it gets IMHO. You can also get wick with pre wound coils around it HERE you may have more luck with this.

Thanks for the replies
4madcats-- Appreciate the offer but got some more on way, needed some anyway. but respect to your kind offer.
Cheers Giles and Des. I will not be defeated by the wick even if it was getting on my wick but thanks for the link about the ready made coils, The wick I was using is 3mm and 0.20 nichrome wire. Thanks des about the info regarding a short, I thought it look good before sticking it in the post but then the battle starts. At the moment I think I am losing 4 or 5 nil, second leg tomorrow.
Thanks again for the replies.

A few of tips which might help you. When putting the wick into the slots, squeeze the wick gently next to slot with tweezers or needle nose pliers to help feed it in. Leave the wires long so they are threaded right through the sleeve before the wick locates in the slots, Preform the legs next to coil or just away from it so they are lying in their final position in the housing sleeve. This means bending on wire very slightly out from the end of the coil and down, the other bending in towards centre and down. Dampen the wick with a little water or juice on the ends..helps stops it unravelling. You might want to have a look at this thread where i posted some pretty pics. (edit) allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=modding&thread=13846 Might help you to see what you should be trying to achieve, but there are many ways to skin a cat. I always wind teh coil 1st and then insert the wick like a thread in a needle. I just find it easier to form neat coil using a drill bit, cocktail stick or whatever. If winding on a wick itself, insert a thick needle through centre of the wick to reinforce it. Run a flame over the wire before using it and it will anneal it slightly and will make it easier to coil. Once formed I run the flame over the coil holding the tails in their correct position with tweezers, this takes the 'spring' out of the coil and legs stay in final position. You will get there with practice and develop your own technique. ,...but just remember there are some days its just seems impossible and the next day all is well again..so if you are having problems, put aside and try again later.
