Chainsmoker: What should I Buy?

I'm a 50 a day Rothmans/Marlboro Red smoker and am going to try e-cigarettes/vaping. Maybe I'm particularly thick, but I have read so much and find that the more I read the less I take in. For example, I'm still not sure whether there is a difference between e-cigarettes and vaping. My brain is swamped with jargon that makes no sense (and yes, I have read the explanatory threads here including the Wikipedia list of terminology)

I just want to give up smoking. I'm not interested in smoking fruit/chocolate/coffee or anything else that doesn't taste similar to a cigarette. Perhaps I will change my mind about that somewhere down the line, but right now I need something that tastes as close as possible to my ciggies. It doesn't have to look or handle like a ciggies, but the taste is very important.

What should I buy? I don't care if the initial outlay is expensive....it couldn't be much more expensive than my wasted hypnotist visit. I don't want to buy something that will have to be replaced after a short while. I have figured out that I will need a few batteries and cartomisers (atomisers?). Looks like I will also need something with low resistance.

I have seen mention of Provari, Pandora, Joy something or other, Boge, etc. but I can't figure out whether they are atomisers, chargers, batteries or something else. Just when I think I have cracked the code, I read something else that sets me back to square one.

Can some kind person please give me a precise list of good quality items to buy. Apologies if this post appears rude. Confusion and desperation have driven me to starting this thread.

I also used to smoke at least 50 a day, so as you can imagine in the 4 years I've been vaping I have saved a fortune & can now climb up even steep hills without getting out of breath.

Vaping is the term that we use for using an e-cigarette as we don't smoke them due to there being no smoke, but vapour.

I know you say expense isn't an issue, but I still think it would be best for you to go for a Riva or ego starter kit before splashing out on a Provari. You can always get a Provari at a later date & still use your Riva as a spare.

All you will need to add to that kit to get started is some e-liquid & I suggest you go for the highest nicotine content - 20-36mg. Now the tricky thing is that you aren't going to get any juice that tastes the same as a burning cigarette. But there are many tobacco flavoured juices available that taste more like the smell of an unlit ciggie. Lol hope that makes sense

Welcome addict. I was like you, analysis paralysis to begin with.

Back to basics - any e-cig, from the cheapest to the most expensive, has basically three bits. A battery, something containing a heating coil to carry and vapourise the juice, and the juice itself.

Batteries go by names such as Ego, Riva, Provari etc.
Juice holders can be of different types, the most common being cartomisers and "clearos" (again with loys of different names)

Juice comes in lots of different flavours but is basically made up of a ratio of two liquids called PG and VG (don't worry about their full names for now) carrying the flavour, and of course nicotine which has it's strength described in mg, e.g. 18mg, 20 mg etc.

The best place to start is to buy a pre-made kit containing a couple of batteries, and a couple of juice carriers. Then select a few 5ml bottles of juice to try. There will be links a-plenty posted to these kits by the folks here

All I know is on that level of cigs you will probably need something like 36mg/ml strength. Flavour was never really an issue for me so can't advise. I found nic level more important. I speak from experience as like I smoked 1oz of tobacco a day (don't know what that is in tailor mades sorry but I know it's a lot).

The provari is the mutt's nuts apparently, though expensive. Very well made, built to last etc..

Generally, when someone comes onto this forum asking for what they should buy first, everyone recommends the riva deluxe kit from vape escape, which is good and well priced.

But if you're a chainsmoker and you want quality that will last, try the provari. You can probably get a kit somewhere.

Whatever you do, don't waste your time with the ones that look like cigs. The batteries only last 5 mins.

As for ejuice, someone else will come along soon to recommend good tobacco flavours, though I've heard that the mutt's nuts of baccy flavour juices are el torob from houseofliquid. They steep tobacco leaves in their juice and apparently it's the closest you can get to a real fag.

As for cartomisers/atomisers etc...I'd recommend buying some boge cartomisers (at low resistance) and a vivi nova.

As chrissie said above an ego/riva starter kit is the best/cheapest place to start iv got a fair few e cigs but i still use my ego batteries sometimes when im out and about.
Finding your perfect eliquid flavour can be a bit of trial and error, have a look through the review section will give you a bit of insight to what might work for you.
One of the closest cig tasted liquids iv found are from here www.houseofliquid.com/ the el torro naturel range are steeped in tobacco leaves, and they have an almost uncanny smokey taste.
But once your off the fags you might find like a lot of people you dont really need that elusive tobacco flavour anymore and can happily enjoy mixing it up with fruity/dessert flavours as well as tobacco ones.

Hi and welcome addict, as has been said, the riva or ego kits are a good place to start, I mainly use a riva 1100 kit, and it is great, the battery lasts 1.5 - 2 days, and it's easy carry everything you need in the case provided in the starter kit.

I have to say that I was also set on using tobacco flavoured juices, but have come to be vaping more fruit flavours than tobacco ones (I only really hit the tobacco flavours in the mornings for the 1st few vapes), but over time you will discover what is right for you.

Hi and welcome! I'll add my vote to the Riva kit linked above and also this - you probably don't smoke all those stinkies because you like the taste of tobacco, you do it to get the effect (remember the first time you smoked and how gross it tasted?! )

At first it can feel like you need as much as possible to be the same as smoking but really, you'll be surprised how quickly your tastes change once you realise you can still have your nicotine, inhale and exhale. Having said that, my Johnny still vapes a tobacco flavour despite having a sweet tooth the size of Birmingham so it's horses for courses!

El Toro all the way for me :-) I converted 2 months ago and tried many tobacco flavours and found little I liked. I tried the El Toro Cigarellos and found it had little taste but the Puros (cigar flavour) gives a real good flavour hit.

You know what? I'm not sure the Riva deluxe kit fits here, if you budget allows then drop straight into a Provari but if you would like to see the cheaper option first I would get a couple of Twists (get the 1000mah ones, they will last the day):

Why? Well it seems as a 50 a dayer you will want the ability to crank the flavour up if you are having a difficult moment and having something that allows you to control the voltage may tick the boxes better for you. El Torro gets several votes but just remember that taste is hugely subjective so you will need to see what's right for you.

As for delivery systems, there are so many, get some Boge carts, nice and easy to fill up and a Vivi Nova and see how you get on. Later on down the line we will introduce you to more complex systems that give you that ultimate control. Links for Boge and Vivi:

I agree with the vivi nova, although I would say to go for the mini nova with a plinth if going for a riva or ego kits, as it looks much better.
