I'm just going to bump this up a bit so I'm more likely to get a reply, and if that doesn't work I'll start a new thread. Sorry if this is annoying, but I'm a desperate woman!

I tried my vh-genesis for the first time today. Followed all the available tutorials, did the mesh, oxidised the bollocks off it, did the coil - and what a lovely looking coil! But it wouldn't fire up at all. Am wondering if I have the same trouble as the person earlier on this thread - something to do with the centre pin? But in one of the tutorials the guy said to push it up as far as it goes, all the way in... Also, before all this I tried taking it apart and a small o-ring fell out. Have no idea where it fell out of - I understand the genny comes with two o-rings (I'm talking about the little diddy clear ones). I have one below the 3 nuts/bolts thingies at the top - so where does the other belong, and could this be the cause? I hope someone can help. These rebuildables get right on my tits, and don't get me started on the vh-dripper or the vh-501 rebuildable..... And it was such a lovely looking coil - sigh... From what you are describing, the other insulator goes around the posi post/nut at the bottom and insulates the post from the 510 threads. The center post should be marginally poking out, ever so slightly or atleast flush with the threads or you may have connection issues. I don't know what battery you are using it on but it's possible that without the insulator it's causing a direct short and the device will not fire. From what i can make of your post, you need to dismantle the center post and put that O ring around it and push it back in and then re-connect the coil.

Well I took mine to bits again - O-ring is intact. When rebuilding I made sure that the tank end caps were screwed together good and tight and that seems to have fixed the leak.

Thanks macca. It WAS a centre post connection problem. Did it all over again and it's vaping lovely.
But (and bear in mind I've only had a couple of drags so far), the flavour is slightly funky. Not REALLy funky, just a little.
Do you think it needs time to bed in, or could it be a coil issue? I've heard too-loose coils = funkerama. I checked my coils and they weren't really loose, mostly snug, mostly all bits of the wrap touching the wick, but not completely....when holding up to the daylight I can see slight gaps in some places....is this my problem you reckon?

My VH tastes a little funky straight after recoiling, it usually goes after a bit of bedding in. If it doesn't, those gaps might be the problem. When it's right, it's great.

SS wicks do take a little time to bed in. The wick will build up a layer of gunk which will make it better as you go through your first tankful.
I found that the best way to find out if the setup works for you is to time your drags and then take the top cap off and fire the battery for roughly the same time as you would drag. If you see glowing coils in that time period that's what is causing the taste.
There are a myriad of reasons why you would be getting a funky taste and they can all be fixed in different ways. So first try above and see where the funky taste is originating from because it is normally from a glowing coil/hotspot. Once you determine the root cause I am sure we'll be able to suggest a couple of things to do to fix the issue.

I have to say it's worth persevering with the setup. Once you get it working right, it is divine

Did you get the tank from the same place as the last one? Looks like I might need another soon.

yep, followed your advice macca, and there's a hot spot. It's at the bottom, where it connects to the screw..any ideas how to fix it?

OK. It was just that I had a short at the bottom once, caused by me slightly lifting the wick and the wire occasionally touched the centre post.
