I think about the Thing every day but am too nice to mention it As for the real nitty-gritty, I'm glad you got all that off your chest, MM, now it's just conveying the severity of the problems to doc and the housing peeps. Wishing you strength and good luck! scylla

MM, it all depends on how much out of date the "things" are. If it's only by a few days, they may still be good. Pop one open and if the yolk stays intact, then chances are it's still good, if the yolk spreads out, then it's probably not good. Of course the sensible thing to do, would be to play it safe and throw them out, but then again I have never been accused of being sensible.

I have found that eggs stay good far beyond their sell-by, but I do keep them in the fridge although one's not supposed to.

I have been doing that for as long as I can remember and the stores keep them refrigerated too. I don't know of anyone who doesn't do that.

You're supposed to have a fastish turnover and keep/use them at room temp. I forgot to say to MM - put an egg in a pan of cold water, if it floats it's stale. If it stays at the bottom but tips up, it's not fresh but OK. That's my experience anyway On sell-by/use-by dates (UK) and packing dates (US) - they're all very well, but they don't tell us when the eggs were laid Submitted by Mrs Jocelyn Lane, dover kent
I don't store my eggs in the frig but keep them in a basket on the kitchen window sill. Every time I buy a batch of new ones, I discard the egg box and write on each egg with a felt pen B/B date. That way, I use the eggs in order. She's called Jocelyn, she must be doing the right thing (Though I don't fancy felt pen on my eggs ) scylla

I didn't mean I was going to do the 'Thing' today - just that I have bought some more eggs!!! Put a whole lot of veggies and some chicken in my slow cooker - smells lovely!! Spoke to the man I know who was with Age Concern, this morning. I say WAS with AC - he told me that when AC amalgamated with Help the Aged a while ago, they got rid of many volunteers, so he had to go. I had a chat with him and he feels sure they will be able to help me though. He confirmed they are still in Wood Street. Made appointment with Doc for Wednesday morning - so will take a list with me. Will go on to Age Concern afterwards. Well that's the plan anyway!! MM

I'm very pleased you've got the ball rolling {{{MM}}} Jerry, on a personal techie matter - I can't see your avatar or your Instigator (is that the word?) signature any more, there's a broken symbol in its place. The same thing has happened with some of Prof's pictures in his Bulli atty review, even tho they are all jpg's. So is there something wrong with my PC, I'm wondering? Especially since your sig is now affected as well ??? Unless you can't see it either. EDIT - Got your avatar now but still not the sig. scylla
