Am a bit puzzled by some comments here... Have a kindle. No ads, never have had. Never paid anything NOT to have ads, so I guess we're talking about the trade-off for having free 3G? Kindle fire...great if you want a tablet, not as good as Kindle if you want an e-book reader (AFAIK) because it doesn't use the same screen technology as the ordinary Kindle, so stuff like being able to read the screen in full sunlight is lost.
As a family, we've had absolutely fantastic experience with Amazon aftersales service. OH is on Kindle 4 after some accidents/problems with previous ones. Some are faults with the device, others accidents. In all cases Amazon replaced his Kindle within 48 hours, free...except the last, when it was out of warranty so they sold him a new one for £30. I don't know how this stacks up against the competition, but it seems pretty good to me.
Oh, and we share books as all our Kindles are registered to the one account..

I've been toying with the idea of buying one of these, but need convincing.....I read a lot & belong to my local library.....I can't decide whether it's worth the investment, as once you've read a book, that's it....I wouldn't read it again, so, with the library, I just return it & get another one free of charge.....In saying that, I know they are really popular & loads of people have them & love them.....I would only use it for reading.

That's why I just have the basic one Chris, I only use it for reading, think it cost me about £50. Have to say, i didn't want to love it, thought that I would miss a real book, but it's great especially good for on holiday

It depends a bit on what you read. If you want the new releases the kindle isn't particularly cheap. Classics (out of copyright) are free or just a few pence. I haven't seen ads either, but maybe you do if you subscribe to newspapers etc.
Also on your politics/moral stance. They shouldn't be doing some of the things they do.

I think it's only the new models that have the ads. Amazon let you opt out for a small fee.

I sometimes have morals, but I can't really afford to dump my Kindle after finding out so long after acquiring it that Amazon are tax avoiders. I've read 62 books on mine this year, and of those over 50 were free ones. New releases, not classics. I've also been able to buy ones I've really wanted to read once they have become quite cheap, or whilst they have been on special offer for next to nothing. Physically, a Kindle feels better to me than a library book, which are usually the rather unwieldy hardback versions. I was also able to take enough books on holiday this summer to last me for the 2 months I was away. Not an easy feat if you try carting the real thing! My personal preference, though, is a much more expensive deal: audiobooks. Even before my Kindle came along, I discovered the delights of reading whilst cooking, ironing, sunbathing (I can close my eyes and still read a book), gardening... And probably my favourite is being able to read a bit before I go to sleep, but to do the "reading" with the lights off and my eyes closed. Bliss.

www.ereaderiq.co.uk/ have a look here, gives you what books are free and if you sign up to there email service you get an email each day of free books of different genre. too be fair probably only one a week will be for you. quite often there unheard of authors but still very good reads. one day a book might be free and the next it is ie: £5 they just do a day or week for free every so often. also if you search amazon by price you can see all there free or cheap stuff. as a rule i read the several reviews and only pick books with 4 plus stars and with 20 ratings. i only have the kindle that has the so called free internet which ive never used. i would like one of the newer ones but i believe only the plain kindle has the special ink but if anyone can tell me different i might be interested. raggy.............

I got 5 free books from my email yesterday, the free books are stacking up faster than I can read them. I love getting my email each day and have passed that link on to so many of my friends. Also as kickits post, bog standard kindle, less to go wrong, no ads. I knelt on it whilst on holiday, phoned Amazon from Turkey and there was a new one waitng for me when I got home.

I had a Sony PRS505 (still do) for 4 years or so and was given a Kindle5 this year. I use them all the time in conjunction with Calibre for organising library, series etc (calibre will even sort out Kindle collections properly). Have a few thousand books in the library, a godsend as that many books would sink the boat. Loads of books, new and old are available, you just have to know where to look.

I really liked the Kobo app on my iPhone and iPad but prefer reading on the Kindle now I have one. Calibre on the PC will convert unprotected .ePub books into .Mobi with no bother so you're not locked in to Amazon. That said being able to synch between books on different devices is such a breeze to do with Amazon bought books it makes them my preferred source.
