Anyone else renewed their Car Tax, Insurance, MOT yet this year all of those plus the price of petrol it's flipping astronomical to keep a vehicle on the road. Just in the process of doing all of mine and feel the need to whinge . . . . Insurance has gone up 41% since last year, despite full NCD and no accidents

MOT is due on the 26th march but its booked in for wednesday at work as i get a 50% discount on MOTs. tax last year was £220 as my v5 sport beetle is a 2.3l engine and my insurance is about £300. on the other hand my camper is tax free as it was registered before 1973 and has classic insurance which costs about £100

My insurance has gone up from £400 to £429 this year - again, full no claims on this one and on another vehicle, which seems to count for nowt.
I'm lucky that my car is still new enough not to need MOT yet, and my lovely Dad is a mechanic and does my servicing (I bought him a new B & D workbench for the latest service) but the fuel is horrendous, considering I do around 15,000 miles a year. I filled up yesterday to the tune of £80, and that's for a diesel, which will do me around 400 miles. Car tax is £125 a year - a lot cheaper for a modern car than my old ones ever were.

It's about the same here in the U.S. My car insurance went up from $500 to $580, with no justification, since I have never had an accident. I paid $100 in car tax, last year. The cost of gasoline is rising, although I think we still pay less than you do in Europe.

Funnily enough my car is booked in for it's MOT Wednesday Camper, my car tax was £245 as it's a 2 litre petrol engine so hows that work then if your's is 2.3 and less - or is that just the annual increase? Crikey Jaki, you do some miles in a year, I barely do 2,000 now . . . my insurance has gone up 60 odd quid since last despite being of a certain age where I can insure with an 'oldies' company and they're the cheapest I can find still. I believe you do Jerry with gas, I think we have about the most expensive petrol in Europe and with the Lybia/Middle East business there's been talk of more rises here.

Perpy, it doesn't help, that I drive a Ford Mustang*, with a 3.8 liter engine. Fortunately I don't drive much. *My second childhood....well actually I'm still on my first childhood.

I know what you mean Perpy. I don't use my car much but the costs of keeping it running are going out the window I check on sites like compare.com but have found the best deal for car insurance has been sticking with the AA.

Tax, insurance, MOT's all renewed on both cars this year! Plus the fact that I drive 50 miles to work and 50 miles back each day... it's getting real expensive! £90 worth of diesel only just covers my home to work mileage and leaves nothing for pleasure driving. It doesn't help that Fiona's car has a 3.2 litre engine in it! Sean

Bloody hell thank god i'm here and not there. My new SUV insurance is similar and just under 400 quid but to fill her up with petrol is only 30 quid. A few years back bottled water was the same price as fuel at 15 baht / litre. (25p then) This place is going the same way . Slightly off topic but another comparison is cigs which were 50p a packet 2 years ago and are now 1 quid per packet.

Portuguese reality:
Diesel - 1,40€/L Marlboro - 4€ Luckies - (still) 3,4€ AmberLeaf (50g) - 5,2€
I know that cigars are still cheap if compared tu UK prices, but the price has been rocketing ! When I started smoking a pack of cigars was like 1,60€ if I remember well. In a flash it went over 2€ and now i doubled! Harsh times we're living in... I spend at least 150€ in diesel and that's just to work... My car spends 6L/100km on average And apart from VAT, when you buy a car you also have to pay another tax over the HP and size of you car. It's double tributation cause then VAT aplies over this tax...

Crikey Sean, that's a heck of an outlay just on petrol . . . I bet Fiona's car goes! Keep saying . . . thank the Lord, I'm not smoking anymore and spending £70 a week on cigs . . . maybe if I didn't keep buying mods, I really would be quids in.

I bet Fiona's car goes! It's big, fat lazy power... but restricted to 155 mph. Her last car (Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor) had a smaller engine but the power was brutal. If you stamped on the accelerator, you'd have to go back to collect your kidneys! Sean

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could run our cars on VG or PG Lisa! And you're right everything is silly money now . . . although I do love the sound of Fiona's fast cars.
