What! Nowhere to vote for 50+years !!!!
Someone here (me) smoked seriously for 50 years and dabbled for a couple of years before that.
......... Gold Leaf - do you remember them? I'm a 50years+ too Liz, and yes, I do remember Gold Leaf but I'd forgotten them I used to smoke them quite often. But the brands that stand out for me are Player's Weights (nicked from Mum), Player's and Senior Service (for when I had the dosh), Woodbines (my fave everyday smoke). That was in my teens. In my twenties I met my husband, he took up smoking for an excuse to get to know me and used to give me Benson & Hedges tipped, so I changed over to tipped fags - how wimpish, but hey! they were free Ended up on untipped rollies, back to being butch again scylla

I hope you have better luck than I did with my sister I don't see her these days, but sent her a Mini starter kit and she just ignored it, even though she gets killer colds/coughs. scylla

( said this elsewhere ) but the last cold I got, shook it off in 10 days. Couldn't believe it, as in the smoking days it would be at least a month before I was lurgy free and always got a chest infection as it never put me off smoking.

Mine tallies up to 23/24 years. My Grandad smoked 60 Capstan Full Strength a day, my Dad smoked til he was in his late 30's and i started at 15 with a friend.I stopped several times, once for a few years then i headed into a divorce and started again.Tried the good old cold turkey last time and lasted 2 days and it was hell.I basically gave up trying after that and smoked through my last pregnancy....if E-cigs had been around i would have definately vaped instead.

My Mother (bless her) thought nothing of asking me to light her a fag whilst she was driving, when I was around 11 years old. Both parents smoked. Mother still smokes (around 20 a day, but won't admit it) but she will be in receipt of my 510 soon! She is already making excuses about how it won't work for her ??? My Grandmother smoked john player specials, she got them cheap as she worked for them in Nottingham. So if you add this all up, I have smoked since birth, but will admit to 30 years of actually setting light to the bleeders!!!!! I will have been vaping for 3 weeks this Friday, and not even thought about a cigarette, (actually thats a bit of a fib, because my breakfast used to consist of a coffee and 3 roll ups, so in the first few days Iwas fumbling about looking for tobacco, but that was force of habit) All this from a woman who dragged herself and her drip outside of the hospital after major surgery, to smoke in the snow

Kat, you've done so well . . . hope Graham is having a similar success. Like you, even hospitalisation on a couple of occasions didn't deter me from smoking . . . I remember having a blood transfusion and insisting on having a fag break halfway through the procedure. How awful is that. :-[

27 years.. However.. I think it's very encouraging that there are many ex long-term smokers here, it just goes to show that old habits can be broken afterall!

You're absolutely right Beepsie, also proves just how effective ecigs are to 'dedicated ' smokers . . . I bet the success rate with NRT products doesn't come close.
