Hi,
I'm a complete newbie to e-cigs/vaping and am at a bit of a loss what to choose for my first experience.
Just to give you a bit of background, I'm a 44 year old bloke who has been smoking regularly for about 23/4 years.
I've recently been told I have bad gum disease at a dentist and this has given me the impetus to finally consider quitting the weed.
I'm a heavy smoker, I used to do Malboro Reds up to 2 packs a day and even more if I went partying. I currently smoke filter less roll-ups with Golden Virginia Green. I also work from home which means I don't even have to go outside to smoke, so my habit is pretty bad at the moment.
Anyway, getting to the point I am totally confused which device to spend my money on. One of my friends has given up and he's using a 10-motives but refilling it himself, but I'm concerned it may not be heavy duty enough for me.
I'm not sure I'm quite ready for a large device, and would initially prefer something that looks at least a bit like a cigarette and isn't too massive.
Given my current (very bad) habit and working from home, I'm very concerned about taste, and the length of time both the refill and batteries will last.
Cost is not too much of a problem, but as this is my first tentative step I don't want to spend lots on something I regret buying.
Having looked around the internet most of the "review" sites seem to be totally biased and also some of the recommended brands don't seem to be available in the UK!
Can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks, LJ
P.S I should add that my current need is to wean myself off of tobacco more than anything else, if I find I get hooked on vaping instead, I can always get more "serious" kit once I work out what I'm doing....

Hello & welcome LJ The ciggie lookalikes wont really cut it for you & you would have to be recharging the battery every couple of hours. So you really do need to go for something more cigar sized like an ego or Riva.

Hi Chrissie,
Thanks for the quick reply, I hear what you're saying. My concern with the bigger kits is that I won't want to use them whilst out and about, as I'll feel like a plum!
Maybe the answer is to have something for home and something for the pub? In which case I'd at least be interested to know which is the best of the ciggie lookalikes?
I've come across the Riva, could you please point me to the ego as I haven't seen that one.

Hi John I'm going to be a lazy bugger and refer you to something I posted a short while ago allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=newmembers&thread=16996&page=1#324186As far as feeling like a plum is concerned, well, yes, it does feel a bit daft at first... but I'm sure you'll get used to it If you get a Riva or Ego kit, you can do what I've done - get some smaller power units (650mah) which will fit more easily in a pocket and a larger one (1000mah or so) which will last longer when you're at home.

Hi John and welcome. Good advice there from Sleepyduck, I felt a bit odd at first out and about but that oesn't last long at all.

I hear what you're saying. My concern with the bigger kits is that I won't want to use them whilst out and about, as I'll feel like a plum! That's half the fun, being different, and not just one of the crowd. Plus you'll soon think it quite normal. I've had my ego for six months now, and have been amazed how many have followed in my footsteps after they've seen how well I've got on with it. BTW Welcome

Hi and welcome John. You need something that is going to last a reasonable time between re-charging, so you are looking at a battery with at least a 900mAh rating in the eGo or Riva range. You can always add something smaller as a backup and for more discrete smoking like the mini eGo suggested or one of these: www.vapeescape.co.uk/the-sd-keyring-ecig~266This is an automatic battery so it switches on when you suck it. The other batteries are manual - you push the switch button on them to vape.

#welcome2# LJ I rolled my own - Old Holborn not Golden Virginia - and what got me off smoking was cig-alikes.and juice from OK Smokey www.ok-smokey.com/e-cig-liquids/e-liquid-20ml.html?p=7 I'd get DF (double flavour), and if you are doing about 40/day I'd get a 20ml bottle of 30mg (which is very high) and a 20ml bottle of 18mg (which is about what most of us use and was enough for me at the pack/day level. I vape something MUCH bigger now, but still use the cig-alikes occasionally when out and about. VapeEscape do egos as well as rivas www.vapeescape.co.uk/search.asp?types=Deluxe+Vaping+Kits+%3E+Joye+eGo-T+900 They are about the same size. If you can spare the cash I'd get a couple of cig-alike batteries and a charger for them as well. The cartomisers that come with the VapeEscape kits will work fine on them. If you are sure you don't want anything bigger than a cigarette yet, you can buy a 510 kit like Karma's link or www.vapeescape.co.uk/ritchy-era-510-starter-kit~429 but I'd also buy extra batteries - at your level of smoking I'd want at least four (I had 6, two chargers and a mains adaptor); and extra (empty) cartomisers - Boge SR would be good.

You have some great advice here, if you take it you'll stand the best chance of giving up the stinkies. As said above a cig-a-like just will not give you enough vapour for long enough to be able to cut down or even quit the stinkies. We have the experience and want to help you, take a leap of faith, we're here to catch you if you fall.

Hi all and thank you very much for the advice, it's not often you get made to feel quite so welcome on a forum, and you've helped me cut through all of the marketing rubbish. I'm definitely going to follow your advice and probably go for the ego. I'm still on the "stinkies" (love the name) at the moment, but I'll let you know how I get on when it turns up, and if all goes well I'm sure I'll be back discussing flavours and asking more dumb questions!

John, the only dumb questions are those that aren't asked Honestly, don't be afraid to ask about anything you don't understand. We all remember how confusing it was to start with.
