I hope she's better soon, Pixi.
Jake, my vet is wonderful. He's knocking on a bit & I dread the day he goes to the practice in the sky.

I'm glad we took her as she got meds I can do bandaging myself and if I'd been home would have tried that first but other half home alone with 2 dogs one of which was bleeding and crying in pain...... Best option vet. Only cost £65 so deff not the hundreds you had to pay jake and worth it to know its done right.
God only knows how the pin moved they were very surprised it was there and it wasn't causing her pain. She's a tough nut really.

I understand this was a different situation, however personally I have training in first aid with people and animals (previous job experience), and that would let me diagnose it without paying hundred of £s. Basically, at the end of the day a Vet is a business (in their eyes) and they must make good money (partly to blame to the pharmaceutical companies charging fortunes for medication that is identical to the T to what WE take as humans but using basic maths to break down to body/weight ratio). Not slating anything or anyone, but I am trying to say that the majority of vets are greedy over priced (insert word of choice here) who care nothing but ensuring that extra £ is squeezed from any avenue possible. You will find this is the majority over people who are fortunate such as yourself who has a GOOD vet!. I wish we did PS: Owner of 3 dogs, one cat and successfully bread two litters all homes with FOREVER homes. Plus all my life being rased with Dogs, cats, horses etc.

Big hug for (((Misty))) I've got 2 elderly poorly cats here & the vets are being fantastic about just doing what is best to keep them comfortable for whatever time they have left.

Not a nice happening, but pleased that she's fine & sorted. That looks a good job, as she'll have to chew some to get that off & worry it, plus she has a nice warm foot in the snow.

Blummin heck Pixi Is your dog's hips ok without the pin? Sounds stressful for all of you, is this the dog you rescued recently? It is karma we've had the same family vet since I was a kid and if I couldn't have paid they would have seen her and waited till my parents got back off hols to pay then it would have gone on the never ending dad tab lol They didn't seem fussed about the hip thing but I'll ask to double check when we go back.

Jake, I'm hearing what your saying, not going to get into any further, as I'm pleased that others do have vets that care before profits!

For instance, even small doses of Paracetamol can be fatal to a cat.

I know what your saying jake and see the point, if at all possible I treat at home before running to the vets. I'm not trained in animals but people and their quite similar. Same meds different dose as you say. For some reason a certain softie has decided its ok for poorly dog to sleep in between us tonight under the covers coz its cold!

Just to echo what Chrissie is saying. Many people do have good vets, I don't really rate the local vet here that highly BUT, it is not a good idea to treat animals with human pain killers, cats and dogs have very different metabolisms to humans, you can end up doing more harm than good unfortunately

Oh I know karma and I wouldn't want anyone to give their pet something that would harm them. Ibuprofen is fatal to dogs as paracetamol is to cats.

Oh I know karma and I wouldn't want anyone to give their pet something that would harm them. Ibuprofen is fatal to dogs as paracetamol is to cats. It is understandable though when the vet charges such a lot for a mere prescription a lot of pet drugs can be bought a lot more cheaply over the internet, but it ends up costing the same as you have to pay the vet to write the prescription edited to add - I'm not condoning this but as the owner of an older dog occasionally he needs metacalm. Costs a blummin fortune from the vets, much cheaper online but the vets will charge me for the prescription I need to get it I know other owners of older dogs and they think I'm mad. Lots of advice - half an asprin a day, a paracetamol, nurofen. the worst advice was half a co-dydramol tablet Nobody wants to see their pet in pain, but due to vets overcharging folks are taking big risks with their animals

Cats are a bit different with medication but dogs are very similar.
I wished so bad we had a good vet like some of you have. But unfortunately when I moved down south, so did the financial element. In Birmingham they "seemed" to care more about the animal in question, cat/dog whichever, but down this side of the woods they are not interested.
On the plus side to the OP, I am glad he is ok and has had the correct treatment to help him. If only you could clone your vets down here as we are in need of a good honest vet. Too many bad experiences with demanding vets, and even taking insurance out they dont seem to be bothered. Again glad he is ok!

I got told by some one once to give my older dog an aspirin to 'calm' her down on bonfire night! Needless to say I haven't and dont plan to take this advice since she'd be calm coz I'd half killed her!
