I live down south in Essex and i have to say our vet is fantastic. Both him and the nurse there are Polish. They have in place an agreement for those who cannot afford to pay up front, so they can pay instalments so the animal is never denied the treatment required. Also, on two occasions one of my cats who is a complete PITA stalking birds etc. and has caught a pigeon and a blackbird. Both times she bought them indoors and both were relatively unharmed, although the pigeon had a bleeding wing. I phoned the vet and both times they told me to bring the birds down there and they told me the pigeon was fine it just had skin lesions. The blackbird had no problems at all. They kept them both there for a couple of days, fed them, checked them over and released them back into the wild with no cost to us at all. Because of that attitude and obvious kindness i dont want to go anywhere else.

Obviously you are not generalizing here... All the vets I have met, care about the animals, certainly alot more than I do. All the ones I have met got into it because they love animals. Have to say, my local vets seem to want to know if you have insurance or can pay before they even look at the animal Well yes, the days of James Herriot giving out help and medicines for free to needy families I'm afraid has gone for the most part. They do have a business to run and it costs alot of money to hire a person who's taken how ever many years it takes to train to be a vet. Plus it costs to run a business and have a premises, alot... While I don't condone leaving an animal in pain while the money is sorted out, I can understand that they have to make a living to pay everyone's wage. I know the vet locally because I work on his surgery's building, he juggles between an animals well being and whether he will get paid and therefore pay his staff and the rent... and the insurances/council tax etc. I've seen him on a Sunday come in and give amazing care to an animal who has been hurt in an accident. Twenty minutes, try getting that from another business at the weekend. I know the amount of money he has tied up in the practice is unbelievable to us mere mortals. At the end of the day, it is a business and if you don't like it, you can go somewhere else.

Aww poor mitsy!!! Hope it heals quickly!!
On the vet debate please don't tar them all with the same brush! We met our vet when we registered at the local vet practise which is a big one with lots of practises in the local area. The vet was amazing but the practise was very money grabbing. Bill (the vet) always looked stressed and tired but still did what he could to save us money despite the fact it could land him in trouble. For instance he knew I knew my stuff with the rats and their illnesses, so when he needed to prescribe baytril he'd prescribe and charge for a single course worth and then give us a whole bottle full so I could self medicate if another got ill.
He's since left and opened his own practise which is 20-30 minutes away, and because he's so good we've registered with him while keeping our local practise for emergencies. He looks so much happier there. On our first visit he showed us all around the practise, and hes still just as good with animals and money. He's told us about some of the local practises habits and how unhappy he was there. Obviously being a partner in a new business means he needs to make money, But he still puts the animal first, and saves us money where he can. For instance my hamster recently had worms, I phoned up and requested advice and whether I should take him in etc. Bill wasn't available when I rang so called me back later, telling me what he'd treat with and saying not to bring the hamster in as then he'd need to charge me for a consult where as telephone consults were free, and to buy the solution online from somewhere different as it was a lot cheaper than they could do it for! If it didn't work then call back and make an appointment. Now that's service!

So glad he is doing well, they are not just a pet they are family and we hurt when they hurt. I know longer have animals but have had mostly good experiences with vets except one. At a junction in Manchester a black Labrador ran in front of the car in front of us, unfortunately the car couldn't stop in time. My instinct was to jump out and go to the dog who was in a lot of pain and badly injured, it did try to bite me but I ignored it, stupid I know. I talked gently and was able to stroke it, the vets surgery was about 30 yards across the road he was my own vet, so sent my husband to get him. He wouldn't come out even though the surgery was empty, his excuse was he coudn't leave because of all the drugs. All he had to do was lock the front door as it was a converted house, no amount of arguing would he come out. I sat in the road in tears nursing the lab until it passed away in a lot of pain. Eventually the vet came out an hour later when the surgery closed to take the body away. I was totally disgusted and very angry. I didn't like him he was very heavy handed with animals and rude to the owners. I never went back to him after that I found another vet.

I wonder who you would report bad vets to though? Must be some sort of regulatory body for them. The more i think about what you have said the angrier i am getting. No body with any sort of empathy or conscience could leave a person or animal in pain like that and do nothing to help. Especially if you are specifically trained to do so!! >

Yes it was outrageous, we lived on that corner of the junction and was just going shopping when it happened. Afterwards I went back home to get cleaned up and change my clothes, I was covered in blood, my own dogs did a runner when I went in it freaked them out because of the smell. I will never forget that day.
Fortunately not all vets are as callous and as cruel as that one, we did try to report him but got no joy from the authorities.
I think I have said enough now I am hijacking this thread, sorry pixie.

She's being very well behaved to say she's not getting walked! And she's not tried chewing off the bandage yet either. I did wake up to her fast asleep inbetween us under the covers though! I sent her to her own bed before I went to sleep last night lol

I must admit, I have used our Vet for many years and they are the cheapest in town. And I agree, like many businesses, some are sharks.
I had to have Dylan PTS on Wednesday last after very regular visits and meds over the last few months and they could not have been kinder - truly supportive. I said to my son who was with me how "non - hardened" they were with us, considering they do this every day.
Got a sympathy card today.
Whilst we were paying the bill (and sobbing) I was worried he was on his own (he had gone by then for about 10 minutes and we had done all the cuddles etc, had been left on our own with him at our request but I couldn't take any more) and they sent the nurse straight back in to stay with him, for my peace of mind.
Made a very hard time a little easier.
