I suppose the subject title says it all.
Don’t get me wrong i LOVE vaping, but is it actually SAFE?.
I think we get so rowed up in defending it against smoking but is their scientific/medical evidence to say it IS safe?.
After days of vaping away at night with plumes of vapor around me I do ponder to myself that this better not end up killing me quicker because of an underline issue that no one either knows of OR are too afraid to raise due to adverse reactions.
Yes I know it has about 3997 less chemicals than smoking, BUT is vaping PG / VG safe? and how about the flavours?. I think there is a bit more chemical components in ejuice than people think, not to mention the binding of juice with the "holding device" (tank etc), then the added factor of the wick and coil?.
Let’s keep this on topic and factual please. This is not a dig at vaping, it is purely an evaluation of the true impact of vaping from a LONG TERM health prespective.

Im unsure how safe it is, but im hoping to get down to 0mg keep at that for a short while then get rid of all my Vaping gear. Once im down to 0mg i dont see the point so hopefully no long term effects for me if there is any.

It's a good question. I haven't looked at any of the research (if there is any...) so I have no idea what the answer might be. My own view is that I know how bad for my health smoking is, and I don't know how bad vaping is, so I'll take a chance that it might not be so bad

Tests have been done, a guy in New Zealand did extensive research on it with an accompanying paper. He concluded that it was safer than smoking and kind of safe in general. Quite convincing evidence.
But he didn't go into wick detail, which is what I'm interested in, so I think it's still valuable to pose questions like this.

a comparison of tobacco smoking vs vaping on the heart Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos from the Onasis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, Greece and his colleague Dr. Giorgio Romagna show us their procedure for their new experiment: The effects of tobacco smoke and e-cigarette vapor on myocardial cells. This type of research will provide concrete evidence that vapor does not equal smoke.
The experiment will extract tobacco smoke and e-cigarette vapor using reproducible, standard, methods and expose heart tissue to these extracts. This will show how heart tissue is effected by the components of vapor and smoke. The results are impressive.
Thanks to Dr. F and his team for this footage. It gives us a first-hand look into how scientific research on vaping and smoking is done.

NOTHING bar fresh air is COMPLETELY safe. Ecigs should be seen as harm reduction, not potential harm ellimination. Ecigs have not been around along enough for long term effects to be noted, there may be some there may not. One thing you can do is to make sure you know what goes into whatever you're vaping and make your choice.

I'm pretty much in the not bothered camp as well Jake . . . it's healthier and cheaper than my £70 a week ( then ) habit of 3 years ago . . . the fact it is healthier, despite us being guinea pigs to large extent, is good enough for me.
Without ecigs, I'd still be on my ( known ) massively damaging addiction.

Actually most so called fresh air these days is not safe. If you live in a city environment you're filling your lungs with all sorts of crap day in day out! Our cities are so polluted by exhaust fumes and other pollutants. All the research so far points to ecigs being safe and carrying a very minimal risk, hence why the tobacco giants are so concerned about them! I've read as much research as I've been able to find and so far nothing points to there being anything in ecigs that is harmful apart from the addiction part in the nicotine, something the vast majority of us already have and the reason behind ecigs in the first place. There's the risk of allergy to certain levels or VG or PG but this is easily sorted by altering the levels of either within the nicotine mixture. At the end of the day for me it's a risk I'm perfectly willing to take. After being a heavy smoker for 36 years, ecigs have given me a new lease on life. I'm now able to do things I couldn't do before. The main change has been my scuba diving which I've wanted to do for so long, now being able to achieve this has given me something to look forward to every year I've survived a highly aggressive cancer which was high grade and needed chemo and radiotherapy; this was hormone related, not smoking, although I continued to smoke through out my treatment. Where as years ago I was coughing up tons of brown rubbish every morning, now occasionally I will have a bit of a tight throat which is clear very easily, but I am a very heavy vaper

Until some really thorough research is done, which is likely to take years and cost a huge amount we cannot be sure. If you are worried try vaping without inhaling, just hold it in your mouth, this might reduce any potential harm to your lungs. Just remember breathing is the most dangerous habit, it is 100% fatal. Once you start breathing you are going to die at some point.

Some good facts there with links.
I understand people will be in the not bothered camp, BUT there are many people who will be interested in hard evidence. I am a factual guy so like to see real credible evidence.
Also with this new EU law (and the ROTW views) I am very surprised that there is not large extensive research being carried out by major researcher’s. Also I would be very interested in seeing evidence from Medical university’s as they generally (as a rule of thumb) give out accurate non biased results.
The way I see things is vaping has been around for some time now. IF there have been conclusive reviews into the medical effects over the year’s surely by now they will have some indication to predict various long term effects.
But I think it’s best to keep the "it’s better than smoke" reply’s down a bit as that is an obvious statement, what the question is asking for is facts.
We will NEVER win over the EU without real facts and that is something the "not bothered" camp need to understand. (no offence to be taken by people there, if it is something you feel strong about then you need to be in the “I am bothered camp”)
[To add: I am not concerned about the effects to myself, it is a general question that people will end up looking at and the internet is full of the generic reply "its better than smoking". Yes WE know, WE have felt the effects, BUT how about people who wish to keep vaping as an alternative to smoking?. This question is for people like that.]

Don't hold out hope for the EU to actually listen to any proper research done. The EU is infamous for passing legislation that has no bearing on the effects of what they are legislating against. Just look at the type approval legislation there are working on at the moment, the research shows that it has no impact on motorcycle accidents but they are still going ahead with it. Lobyists who throw money at the parliament get legislation that benefits them. Common sense or unbiased research is thrown away once the bribes start flowing. The new MOT laws aimed at motorcycles are based on figures provided by the company that will most benefit from the new legislation, the reality is they will have no effect on motorcycle safety they will just line the pockets of a few big companies.

In truth, the only "unknown" is flavouring - and it's only "unknown" because there are so many flavours, so it's a practical impossibility to fully evaluate each one indiviidually.
In terms of PG/VG vaporisation, there have been studies conducted in the past which show not only no ill effects from quite concentrated levels, but some benefits (the anti-bacterial nature of PG), plus numerous risk assessments on vaporised PG and VG in the entertainment industry have shown no ill effects over a period in excess of 25 years from the regular inhalation of lesser concentrations - so that's covered, then.
For Nicotine, there are myriad studies on the inhalation of said substance and it is plentifully known about - again, not 100% safe, but then nothing is. Its risk profile is very low in the quantities we use.
If, therefore, anyone is in any doubt, the only unknown is flavouring. To that end, I have tried plain unflavoured VG with the required concentration of nicotine, and it's palatable - a little menthol won't hurt (already used in inhalation remedies, so no harm there) or some ethyl maltol (again, widely understood to be GRAS for inhalation) for a touch of sweetness (both formulations are already through the first phase of trials, by the way, for MHRA purposes) and you're gold.
Hope this helps.
