As you know siffy I still have my one a day, a little like your dad I guess, I will not let go of it - if I do the others have won lol. Your dad doesn't need to worry about his nicotine levels as there are no reports suggesting nicotine is bad for us to any extent. If his results from the doc are less than he liked due to what could be smoking, then he should go up in nicotine, or , and vape more to try to cut out the 5 ciggies he is having. The nicotine is neither here nor there, if he went on an inhalator through the doctor he would be prescribed 12 cartridges a day each containing 15mg nicotine, so the amount we vape is negligible compared to what the doctors prescribe. Good point, very true sammy13. I will speak to him tomorrow and see what he's planning to do.

I can't believe that article, but having been to a smoking cessation clinic, once ( the second time was to tell them they could do nothing for me goodbye) what I can tell you is they are useless. They give you a date to quit, and tell you to work out how much smoking costs, and write yourself a list of all the nice things you will buy with the money you save ( I told her it would go towards the leccy bill :-) ) They then give you a prescription for a weeks worth of nrt, their idea is that each week over 12 weeks they reduce the amount until hey presto you have stopped. I queried why when I was only having one ciggie a day did they want me to inhale so much nicotine per day. I checked the website of the inhalator and it says some people take 3 years to quit using one, so where they get 12 weeks from is beyond me.
Anyhow what I was meaning to say before the rant, was the reason that article has been printed is because now not as many people are using their service, so they are losing money, and the nrt is not been purchased either so people are losing money from that too. So in short vaping is losing the clinic people and the government money.

Also sammy13 smoking cessation workers could end up losing their jobs If you look at the ingredients of the Nicorette Spray Mist thingy, it contains exactly the same as we vape, VG, PG, Nicotine and flavours and a few extra ones ???

siffy I don't know how old your Dad is but I will try and make this very brief. I am the wrong side of 50 and have no family ( Mother/ Father) so I cannot see what ailments so to speak run in my family. I have been in the meat trade for 40+ years now and as such always had access to all the best meat i.e. T-Bone steaks etc. etc. My Doctor knew this and sent me to have a cholesterol test, it came back bad like a high 9, he put me on 2mg Simvastatin daily which lowered it but not enough, now I am on 40mg and have been for 5 years, I have a blood test every year and its all good. Never once was nicotine mentioned, all he says is "do you smoke" to which I say "No". So tell him not to worry about the nicotine but to ditch those last fags cos they aren't doing him any good with those chemicals in them. When I first started this vaping lark I was on 36mg Golden Virginia now I am on 18-24mg so its slowly going down with no cravings for fags. Hope this helps a bit

I had to have a triple heart bypass 12 weeks ago, and the consultant I had at King's College Hospital was very encouraging re. me vaping instead of smoking. When I came off cigs ( I smoked for around 30 years) I started on 24mg liquid ( I used to smoke about 25 a day, more if I was drinking etc) but came down through the levels over some weeks and am now mixing my own at 3-4Mg.
While I do vape quite a lot while I'm sitting at the PC etc I don't think I'm taking anywhere near as much nicotine as I was before with higher Mg.
I found a bottle of 18Mg laying around the other night, and I had a quick blast of that and got a proper headrush!
Your dad will do fine if he just comes down through the levels at his own pace. And you have to remember either way, vaping is MUCH less harmful all round than smoking all those chemicals and tar.

Just to thank everyone again for their help on this subject. I normally chat to dad Tuesday but couldn't and have just finished talking to him.
He too said thank you very much indeed. In the meantime he has gone on 24mg and is finding that far more satisfying although no talk yet of dropping the 5, but you never know.
He also splashed out and purchased a blood pressure monitor as he's convinced that goes through the roof due to stress at being at the doctors, he like most hates having to go.
I read out bits and pieces from the links you posted, I checked he takes cod liver oil and he does. So fingers crossed his next check up will be better blood pressure and cholesterol wise. If not at least he now is happy to know that vaping is not the thing giving him the problems. He sees the doctor in about 2 weeks and now has his ammunition.

Mark Twain said "Giving up smoking is easy, I've done it a hundred times" staying stopped is difficult, a plan to to stop smoking is effective, if the smoker wants to quit.Vaping wont stop anyone smoking, but it will distract long enough for sanity and willpower to kick in. I managed to stop smoking for 6 months earlier this year, and decided to start again cos I missed it, the strange thing is, none of the fags I smoked was ever as satisfying as I thought it would be, so I've stopped smoking again I have found 18 too strong for me at the minute and plan to cut down my nicotine strength next week, I HOPE I can to continue using vaping as a distraction from smoking, I am not expecting it to make me stay quit. Tell your Dad tobacco flavours are available, and to have a go at not smoking. I smoked 100g of rolling tobacco a week for 30years.

Thanks keepitgoinAnd good luck on your vaping journey too. He is lucky as he has found he likes USA mix so has no juice taste issues (lucky thing!) I think with him he doesn't really want to drop the 5 a day and can afford to buy them. I do however hope that when his ciggy contact stops work (she is an air hostess) that will be the end of the cigs. He has all but said so to me. I live in hope though that it will happen sooner than later.
