It doesn't seem to make any difference which way I put my batteries in. SD works exactly the same. Must try some different batteries tho', these are as weak as water. Lynda

My MkII SD should have the battery with the negative toward the button end. If I put it in t'other way around, I would worry that the 'fuse' (spring) wouldn't protect from explosion. Fox

No they're not protected ones Lolli, but Keef did say that she thought the protected ones would fit, i was thinking of getting some, but they're a lot more expensive.... As Scylla says, the SD seems to work whichever way the batts are in, but as the spring acts as a fuse, shortening in the event of a problem with the battery or atomiser, i wonder if there would be a safety issue with the batt not being in the 'correct' way round ??? I think Trog needs to make it VERY clear how to put the battery in, if thats the case, as the way batts normally go in is with the battery flat end against the spring, if there is one... they go in the charger like that, they go in my er.....battery powered device for ladies like that

Lilac you say - "as the way batts normally go in is with the battery flat end against the spring, if there is one..."
I'm now putting it in as Keef said to, ie, positive to spring, (not the flat end to spring) so am wondering how you're doing it.
If these batts are unprotected seems more important to be sure.

I only have Mk1's and always put the battery in plus end to the spring. I believe that was in the original instruction sheet that Trog sent out with my original SD 7 months or so ago. It might be important because the spring I believe acts as a safety measure, in that it will short out should anything go wrong with the battery. If the battery is in the wrong way that might not work? I dunno, I'm no expert, but plus end to the spring is definitely the right way.

Hi Jackie :-) Yes I'm doing it that way now (altho we didn't get instructions with ours) - it's comforting to know there's a safety device if something shorts out isn't it. Hope you're enjoying it loads :-)
Quiet here today.................

Jackie, you are right, it is in the original instructions - just found the sheet I got with the first SD I bought in Dec 2008 It's very quite isn't it Lolli?

It's very quite isn't it Lolli? Mmmm - very sunday afternoon ish Having a lazy day so finally got to follow link to Kate's network & read lots there. Followed more links on from there & am inwardly digesting. I agree with her, regarding the huge threat to us all, relating to our civil liberties generally & the need for being pro active in their defense. It's appalling so much is being eroded without the bulk of the population being motivated to action Edit crossed posts *waves to MM*

Jaki I dont think it will make any difference which way round the battery is, if the battery shorts it gets VERY HOT, the spring melts well shrinks down and does not connect.
It is the heat that causes this to happen and having managed to short a battery out I can promise you that both ends reach a very high temperature symeltaniously.
It did this in my bag not my SD but it was HOT HOT HOT could not hold it in my hand - got an acrid smell , it vented some white powdery stuff out the top, but did not blow up.
DONT carry spare batteries in the same pocket as change and keys... Or anything metal.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up Keef. I must admit I've always thought that not putting it in the right way would cause problems of some sort, good to know that it won't if I ever do that by mistake. Hasn't happened yet in 7 months but you never know.

The only problem with it being inserted upside down was that you may have trouble getting the body to screw shut completely without forcing it . That really boiled down to luck as the exact size of the 16340 batteries from china was a bit variable from batch to batch. If they were a bit on the large size inserted the wrong way and you forced it, you could potentially put strain on the internal switch and the spring. Same as the protected 16340 batteries may possibly do as they are a bit longer - many people use the protected ones with no problem so its really down to luck and common sense. If you are twisting it shut and you start to feel resistance before it is fully closed always STOP and ask yourself WHY. Iv done it and I did notice it did not screw close 100% but I was busy and it worked so vaped away .... only when I went to change the battery I realised it was upside down Much the same as the time I put 2 batteries on to charge and did not notice they were in the charger back to front. Yes the light went out but did I notice there was no red light...... umm nooo I did not I only realised what a dumpling I was when the battery I was using went flat and the 2 I thought I had charging were also flat when I took them out of the charger. Luckily I had some old partly charged 901 batteries in a box that tided me over but swapping 8 of them over for a few hours taught me a lesson. I now always look for that RED light to come on when I stick a battery in the charger.
