It's ok using the price of Office as an advantage of owning a Mac but there's plenty of free offerings such as Open office too on windows. Mac use great hardware I will give them that but no better than you can buy to use Windows on if you want to, infact for the same money you'd probably build a better pc hardware wise if you built your own. I detest their practices and policies though, just the point they want everything run in house so you're tied to them no matter what means I will never own an Apple device again. It's pointless arguing who's is the better software between Windows and Mac OS's as they both just use everybody elses code/software these days including each others and claim it their own, buy up the real developers ideas and say they are ingenious ground breakers lol. not too far in the future you won't be able to tell the difference between them other than logos. The desktop I'm using now Mev had the basic office version on it as they want you to upgrade, so everytime you open it it promps you to buy whatever, well 4 years on it's not happened and never will, we must use it at least 3 x a year lol

Get rid of it and install Open Office, totally free and does almost exactly the same job mate and for your usage probably ideal.

My 2 cents: - Get one with a SSD for atleast the OS and a traditional HDD for the data storage. The speed difference is amazing - I bought a PC from Arbico (http://www.arbico.co.uk/) and its been great for the past 2 years - While Openoffice is decent, you will randomly lose formatting, fonts, bullets, styles etc. if you open a MS-Office document in OO and vice versa. In my opinion, MSOffice is worth it. Do check if your employer has a deal with MS, or if you can get a student edition (legitimately) - If you want to play games, the HD4000 graphics mentioned earlier will perform very poorly. You will need a decent graphics card to play most games at nice-looking settings - Do ensure your PC has USB3 - Having a card reader is definitely more worthwhile than a CD/DVD drive - Check the fan noise levels. You may not notice it when you buy, but you will definitely notice when you are trying to work, or watch a movie - If it has Wifi, it may be worth checking that the antenna can be connected remotely. Some have a cable to which you can attach the antenna so it gets a better signal - Don't skimp on the keyboard and mouse - they are what you use to interact with your PC the most. Take the time to type atleast several dozen words using the keyboard

Some good points there surfatwork, and we could legitamatly get a student Ms office what ever that costs? These ssd's as i know nowt about them, I have found that they are expensive and only come in small sizes compared to a normal hd, like 100/200gig, so are they just used to put the os on and programmes, but not for storing data on pics video etc?

Mesh, Mesh, Mesh, Mesh computers, had mine for 9 years now and it is still going strong and also it works so well it still gives me the chance to annoy all you's lot, what more can you ask for Upgraded it with a few things only when they break though, no need for Microsoft office, open office works great (unless your job involves deep spreed sheet work or writing) and no need for virus software as there is free ones out there that imo are better than paid for ones.

I steer clear from p.c world, load of idiots and their p.c's are pre-installed with crappy stuff that you will never need and get pestered with notifications to upgrade and when you remove the software it's lying there somewhere in the background Stick with smaller based computer makers imo.

I started with its predecessor, the ZX81, upgraded to the Spectrum, together with a custom briefcase which included the thermal printer and extra RAM kit etc. Learnt the Basic language on it and used to take it along to sales meetings and 'amaze' the reps with graphs etc of their performances. (They thought I was destined for big things, where did it go wrong?). Also had great fun keying in the games programmes from the magazines at the time. I think it's still in my ex's attic... will have to dig it out next time I'm around there... can you still get hold of cassette tapes? Hope you get what you want Bluefish, it all confuses me now.

Basically, yes. I have the O.S. my "main" software/apps and my games on the SSD. All storage is on the HDD. It's a great set-up. It starts and shuts down stupidly fast...but the best (in a way) is the load-up speed of apps. I have some expensive software which would normally take a while to start up and for the computer settle down. Most of them are 2-3 second start-ups. If you fancy an SSD, it needs to be a bit of a hobby in the dark nights, to get it set up. Obviously, life-expectancy is possibly less then the life of the PC, so filing away all the software and windows DVD is essential.

Bluefish, SSDs are relatively expensive, but you need only a small one for your OS and programs. As an example, on Arbico, adding a 60GB SSD as your primary hard drive, and adding a second 2TB hard drive for storage would add about £100 to your order. and they are fast. My windows 7 laptop used to take over 1 minute to boot up with a normal HDD. With a SSD, it is less than 30 secs from being turned off. I use Linux, and that takes about 5.5 secs. As for Office, I just discovered Kingsoft Office and it seems very good indeed. and free.
