Playing devils advocate here. Would anyone take the compromise that vaping as we know it would be left alone, no flavour bans, no limit on strength, no ban on refillable's or 2nd/3rd gen devices. No bans of use in pubs, restaurants, transport etc etc. Left exactly as it is now except that it would be taxed by 58.5%?

putting it into perspective, that would mean a £5.00 bottle of juice would become around £6.58-ish (provided the 58% tax was a straight replacement for 20% VAT), not un-doable if push came to shove and the alternative was a ban ...

Would that 58.5% tax be on the hardware as well as juice, coz that could work out quite expensive when buying mods etc, and considering we all keep buying and upgrading our equipment we could end up spending twice as much (or more) as we did on fags. Shinyitus might just go out the window

I would, if it's less than buying cigs. It's not a hobby to me I just want the nicotine fix without smoking. So my main concern is juice strength and price. You said strength /flavours would remain as is, so yes I would accept that compromise.

The Italian government has now proved beyond a shadow of doubt: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!
And that's what we've been saying all along eh

Still cheaper than smoking, unless you are buying prefilled.
& much cheaper you mix your own, presumably you'd only pay tax on the nic.
Be interesting to see if in practice they manage to stop people buying from outside Italy and not paying tax.

Be interesting to see if in practice they manage to stop people buying from outside Italy and not paying tax. You know what giles, it actually is cheaper to smoke than vape where I live. A pack of 20 fags cost around 2 euros (some brands as low as 1.10 euros), a bottle of e-juice here costs around 7.50 euros, now imagine if they put 80% tax on that e-liquid - 10ml would cost around 13.50 euros equivalent to almost 7 packets of 20 cigs (at the higher price). Not much incentive for a smoker to start vaping over here. Also we don't have as many benefits for vaping as those of you in the UK: 1. Due to our climate we normally sit outside at bars/cafes/restaurants - no incentive to change to vaping 2. All the vaping gear (hardware) is twice, if not 3 times as costly as the UK - no incentive to change to vaping 3. Smokers don't tend to have the social stigma attached to them as in the UK - no incentive to change to vaping So, you see it costs more for us to vape, it's not any more convenient to vape and we're not considered outcasts as smokers The only benefit I can see for us to switch from smoking to vaping is: 1. Our own personal health 2. Not smelling like dirty ashtrays Ok, it would work out cheaper if we mix our own like I do, but I haven't met anyone over here who mixes their own. In fact I can't even get the gear over here to mix my own, it all has to come from the UK, even the concentrated flavours!!! No nic base anywhere, or PG or VG Also what will be interesting is the fact that our e-cig shops stock a wide range of Italian e-liquid, in fact mostly from Italy so even if our government doesn't raise the tax on e-cigs it looks like we're doomed to pay a rather high price for our e-liquids (with the exception of myself of course )

That's bad toots. Vaping should always be cheaper than smoking. Does stuff come from the UK and elsewhere OK, or does it get held up at customs? I've yet to buy anything at a B&M shop, but people should be able to do so at a tolerable price.

I've yet to buy anything at a B&M shop, but people should be able to do so at a tolerable price. I've only had one package held up at customs (so far ) and I was sweating on that one as the minimum duty fee over here is 30 euros which would have been catastrophic as the order only contained one battery & charger, might have been 2 batteries actually. It was stuck at customs for 3 days then passed without any custom duty thank goodness. Most of the time I try to have goodies sent to friends in the UK who are scheduled to fly over here so they can bring the stuff out to me. My mixing liquids do have to be sent over though, can't risk nic liquid in people's suitcases!!! Also the VG/PG liquid has to be sent over due to the amount of mls people are allowed to bring over with them. Got some on order at the moment, always sweat about customs especially with the nic juice I've placed my first order at fasttech, and will be very anxious about customs with that one - hoping and praying it goes through customs without any hitches
