I've an HP Deskjet 4580, and am about to put it in the bin for waste collection tomorrow! Have searched YouTube and HP support, but, as you'd expect 'useless'. I've taken the old catridges out no problem, press down and remove... but how the hell do you get the new ones in? Is it me and just old age or do they make these things so that you have to buy a new one? Any help appreciated.

All printer cartridges are a con, there is software out there that can reset the printer cartridge software to stop the printer thinking you have ran out of ink when you have not. A lot of printer cartridges do guess work, i.e it guesses how many pages you have printed and decides that you have ran out of ink so sends this information to your printer software to tell you to replace the cartridge even though you still have ink left so you cannot print anymore until you replace the cartridge. I myself am gonna go down the route of filling my own cartridges from now on, all you need is ink and a syringe (depending on cartridge) Spoke to a technician and he said you are better of buying a new printer (check to see if it comes with full ink cartridges not 25% full cartridges) as it works out cheaper sometimes than buying new ink cartridges.

I buy non oem cartridges from eBay. Usually there's a little procedure to override the printer software telling you the cartridges aren't oem and refusing to work. The eBay supplier can tell you what the procedure is before you buy.

Agreed such a flippin rip off, I bought a new kodak printer just over a year ago when my faithful Canon bubblejet finally gave up the ghost, because kodak claimed they had the lowest ink cost - my arse. The cartridges have a chip on them & once that tells the printer the cartridge is empty (or not), there's bugger all you can do about it other then buy a new cartridge or replace the chip, if you can find them, just refilling the old cartridge doesn't work & it looks like all the main manufacturers have gone the same route for home printers.

This is why I always buy Epson and use ssc serve to reset the counters, Then when they really are empty I pay just under 20 quid for 4 sets of ink delivered. Bargain.

I am so frustrated with this too . I have a brother multi function printer and bought compatible inks from ebay. After changing them the damn thing keeps saying now that its unable to clean because of the incompatible inks. I am at a loss and don't know what else to do. If anyone has a solution I would be so grateful

I don't know if this will work with the current range of new chips, but you used to be able to reset the older ones by swiping the chip with a strong magnet.

Apologies for the delay in replying... lost my broadband soon after posting. Very hit and miss this morning, I imagine it's the winds!
Anyway thanks for all your replies, will watch the vids once my connection has stabilised.

Again, apologies for the delay. have had no phone or internet for nearly two days. What happens when someone cuts the power, we're doomed, doomed I tell you! Anyway this printer is going to the 'printers in the sky'... have tried everything and the new cartridges will still not go in, and yes they are the right ones from CartridgePeople. Don't need to print much, but I'm going back to a good, reliable laser printer, no more 'rip off' inkjets. If they can produce good quality prints, why can't they make it far simpler to replace the ink, even if they are a rip off.
