can make them for my davide but then they just won't fire up with the cotton wool in place. Someone said something about flaming them with a blow torch (which I have) but will any cheap chemist tweezers do to hold it with whilst I flame and pinch them?
I know it may be a dumb question but could really do with it answering
thanks

The flaming with a blowtorch is just to get the coil nice and tight, by heating and squeezing with tweezers. You can do the same by adding the coil, dry burning until glowing then power off and squeeze. It's easier on RBAs than in a a Davide head, and you have more room.
I use cheap tweezers from the supermarket, flat ended ones for squeezing coils and needle nose ones for more delicate work like catching hold of reluctant cotton when threading in tight spaces.
I'm not sure that heating the coil is your issue though, unless it's too loose and touching the side somewhere. Does it fire without cotton? Is there any way you've moved the coil when adding the wick?
I'm sure you know this, but it's worth restating - never fire the coil with dry cotton in it, it will burn and the coil will always taste rank. Make sure you wet your wick with a couple if drops of juice

Any metal tweezers will do Jane, just squeeze the coils together, flame, and let cool whilst still squeezed. Repeat a couple of times. Be careful though - metal tweezers transmit the heat to your fingers

Jane, is it possible they are shorting out. I know my first coils in an Evod where fine but when I fitted the same coil to a protank they were shorting out. I found the problem was when I shipped the spare lengths of wire off the coil legs they were shorting out to the body once screwed in. So rather than snipping the legs off if you are you need to wiggle them to snap them off really close to prevent a short. What are you trying to fire them on ? Do you have anything you can check the coil resistance on once the coil is screwed into the base of your davide. Once you have good resistance drip some juice to saturate the cotton and coil then fit the tank and fill up.

I've just rewicked with old method this am Greg and there's no way I can wiggle the legs off. Nail clippers it is going to have to be. I just have a dodgy vamo to check the resistance but thanks for all the advice guys... Am thinking microcoils on a protank may be more hassle than they are worth LOL

To help wiggling the tails off @johanino squeeze the atomiser head between forefinger and thumb of one hand, whilst wiggling with the other. This was the main cause of my early failures with Protank coils, and once I got into wiggling (!) I have reduced my failures to about 5% of all coils attempted. Persevere with the microcoils, they are awesome once you have them sussed, and it only takes a couple of minutes to change the cotton wool whilst the coil goes on for weeks at a time!

+1 for persevering @johanino - its not hard once you get the hang of it and they are much better.
Not that there's any law against using cotton wool in an ordinary coil, and just changing the cotton wool when it gets gungy, leaving the coil where it is and dry-burning before you put in the new cotton.
A microcoil won't work unless you squeeze it while it is hot - preferably red-hot. I use cheap flat-ended tweezers, a gas hob & an oven glove.

I got it fixed. My coil was too high up in the protank/davide base. I used an 18g needle for making the coil. Happy days... Anyone got any good ideas how much cotton wool I need for making the wick to stop it flooding..... I tested the coil on a vamo with an ego adapter for the connection probs. Came up 2.1 without the top stem on (when it was too high up) and 0.4 when the stem was on so changed what I make my coils with Happy days

Roll the cotton, thin enough to pull it through. Pull extra through, and flare/fluff it so it fills the gap. Then cut of the extra. Works every time for me [ps - i think that resistatance is wrong, because i KNOW that vamo is broken ]

I've done all that fred and it's still flooding....why oh why after a few puffs on the micro coil do I get a really tight vape and like flooding? I've tried changing the battery, cleaning out the centre everything (I'm on a protank/davide) Any ideas? Pics/ videos? Should I just be using imr batteries now rather than green panasonic in my mechanical magneto? Jane

Dont know how tight your needle is?
I use 2mm drill bit - if your needle is pink, I think its a bit thinner than the drill bit.
(The mod/batteries shouldn't make a difference!)

I had the same problem when I started recoiling my protanks @johanino and the problem was too much cotton wool in the coil, I was twisting the cotton too tight so after a few draws the wick swells and the coil strangles the wick, I have found using less cotton and not twisting it much at all works much better and the wicks last longer, it's just a bit of trial and error.

@johanino - as Fred mentions, I think your coil is too small to fill all the gaps in the head when you wick it, although it's difficult to say without seeing it. What I do is to make my coil on a 2mm drill bit and then transfer it to a smaller bit (or needle, whatever works for you to sit it at the right height) when i install it in the head.
As a quick fix, try laying a piece of 1 mm silica on top if you have it and see if that fills the hole. Once you've put it all back together, make sure you fluff that cotton where it sticks out.

Hmm, does sound to me that the wick is too thick and is swelling once it's soaked in juice and clogging the coil. Whip that piece out, and try twisting a smaller bit. I still make the mistake of pulling what I think is enough off the cotton wool ball, only to find that I've got twice as much as I need. You really don't need a lot to wick efficiently - it should still pull through from side to side when you gently pull the long twist before trimming it. If it snags, there will be too much CW!

ok guys...will try next time I rewick...just tiny wee bit (not the half a head of hair as mentioned on the you tube videos) and it should slide nicely through the coil without using tweezers? Is that about right? and do you wet it at this point or not? Thanks for all the tips I will get there PS. I don't know what I did at 5pm but it's working fine now. No tight draw. Hardly any flooding ...am one happy bunny...thanks for all the tips though
