Hey guys, I've recently rebuild my coils and for some reason this round has resulted in very bad rubber tastes smells when I fire them up. I've already rebuilt them once using 32ga Kanthal, on 2mm silica, 6 wraps and it was fine, not bad taste, and vaped like a champ. This time, everything the same, just 5 wraps instead of 6, and near enough all of them taste of rubber! I've since learned that once the rubber grommet bung has burnt then it's going to taste like that forever? Is there anywhere that I can get replacements from? thanks Edit: You can actually get some replacement grommets here which are silicone instead of rubber! r.ebay.com/Y3kajS

It's normally the legs burning the rubber that can cause this, either vape through it as it does go after awhile or use res/non res wire.

Could also be now he is only doing 5 wraps that maybe he ain't adjusted his battery as the ohms are now gonna be lower and create more heat.

I've got so much silica to use up before I try the mirco coils, and like a said on a previous thread - I'm bit of a skin flint to let it sit there hehe. I adjusted the volts down t0 3.6-3.8 for the 5 wrap coils when it happened. But you're right, I've been vaping through (taking a draw and blowing it out without taking it down) and the rubber taste is going! Strange.... I'll have a look around for the rubber grommets.

The vaping through method is working, but still getting a slight taste of burnt rubber from the grommet. Plus I'm caning about half tank of juice just to do this.
Even recoiling with new wick it's still there. Grrr wish I could just get some replacements or some silicon grommets instead of the rubber

I'm sure I've heard dry burning can burn the rubber grommets. If your microcoiling then try flaming the coil and the silica off the head only before putting the head together. Fit a new clean grommet and see if that works

OK - swap the goal posts of being a tightwad! Put the silica away for later use, sell it or swap it.
'Borrow' a cotton wool ball, pad or pleat from your OH, mum, gran, sister, next door neighbour or pet (I say pet, as my cotton came from the vet)
Use the cotton - it WILL give you better flavour.
As you are coiling, make the legs by doubling the wire over and twisting together, thus halving the resistance of them - now, the double legs will not burn the rubber. + its MUCH easier than res/non-res.
My microcoils are double wrapped anyway, so the legs have 2 strands which I twist together. (Approx 1.1 ohm in protank, with no burning )

Ok I will eat my humble hat. Cotton wicking is awesome...but I do get the odd burnt rubber taste on a few rebuilds. Must be the grommets. So I'm putting them aside until I can find replacements.

I am at present recoiling these using 1.8 ohm nores-res-nores wires from fasttech and using cotton summer fashion yarn and the vape is GREAT!

I'm following rip trippers guide on youtube just now and everything goes pretty well but my coil is coming up at 4.5ohms for some reason lol. Just as well I bought 10 metres.
