Just built a protank coil using 6 wraps of 0.25 kanthal, I was attempting to build a micro coil but could not get the wire to stay together by flaming it with a lighter. I was going off Super Shiny's micro coil and cotton guide. So the standard type coil I have ended up with is reading 1.3 ohms. Is this type of Kanthal good for building standard coils? Since that is what I've ended up with. Also, the legs after wrapping are facing opposite ways, in Super Shiny's guide it said the legs should face the same way, but since mine has not turned out to be a microcoil, is this ok?

You wound the wire on something like a small screwdriver? Lined up the legs so they're facing the right way? Then you took it off and squeezed the coil and flamed it red hot?
Sometimes a vid says it all

Thanks for that. Still not getting how you can make the legs face the same way, after 6 winds around a jewellers screwdriver my coil legs were facing opposite ways. It looks in the video like his are too, I couldn't really see. Did he line up the legs to face the same way after torching? I need to buy a little blow torch, the lighter I have is not cutting it. So for the time being the 0.25 Kanthal is good for building standard coils?

niamh297 you line the legs up before you torch them as you bring the wire around for the last turn they do want to spring in different directions but you kink 1 leg a little to keep in same direction.

I don't really understand how the legs are facing different ways after 6 coils, but if they are, how about doing six & a half coils?
I think you need a decent cooking blow torch or a gas hob unless you have a very fancy lighter. Don't do what I did and get a mini ego-sized thing, it is too awkward to use.
You'll have a pretty low resistance coil with .25 unless it is a microcoil, because you can't make it too long on a protank. Which may or may not matter depending on your mod.

I think I am getting confused about what "facing the same way" meant, I think the legs on my coils are probably ok, basically they are turning inwards, facing each other, I'm not very good with the this stuff, easily left puzzled and scratching my head, sorry. Yes I am going to buy a blow torch definitely. I want around 1.2 ohms or therabouts so the kanthal will be good I think, yes, I noticed there was not much room.

If you imagine looking at the coil end-on, then the legs could look like either of these. Obviously the first is correct for a Protank, Evod etc

well i have the same issue, my legs go all over the place and dont end up looking right. (or is that my wifes legs as she p*sses herself laughing) i know what u mean niamh297, legs dont go the same way. worse than that they come out to big from the 2mm screwdriver , should i use smaller than that (0.25 wire 9 turns) looking to make 1.8 ohms. they are coming out as 0.2-0.6 just cant get it. they look good and neat but lol

I'm wondering if you mean by facing in opposite directions that it looks like onedays same way diagram but one leg is in front of the implement you are wrapping around and the other finishes behind the implement, this is correct you can't do it any other way

clivealive1 I use this for my protank2 coils, the one with the arrow ( ain't got a clue what size it is). But this is what I use to make all my coils. Hope that kind of helps.

If your using 9 wraps of 0.25 kanthal on a 1.5 or 2mm former then it's impossible to end up with a 0.6 ohm coil unless you have a short. Take the coil that's measuring 0.6 out of the base and measure it again with a multimeter, I'm confident it won't be 0.6 anymore.
