Sorry peeps. I have been at my daughters.
My head is spinning. I think I have caught a nasty bug from the kids. Temp up to 38 degrees. Throat sore and awful headache. But that's not the only reason my head is spinning.
We had the viewing. It is a fantastic place. The interior decor is just lovely! I was very surprised at how good it looked. They must have had an interior designer in there which is hard to believe for a housing association, but every detail was well thought out. There is a spa room with bath and other stuff that you can use whenever you like. That is onvtopvof the beautifully tiled wet rooms in each flat. They even have those lovely long chrome heated towel rail things that also heat up the bathroom. Always wanted one of this.
They have special big room downstairs for charging wheelchairs and scooters. Holds thirteen.
Two sun rooms. A library. Large lounge area again beautifully done out.
They also have a lovely garden area out the back which has lots of raised flower beds, but nothing planted yet. I was very surprised to see a brick built barbecue too!
So, why is my head spinning you may ask?? When we arrived I was told our flat was on the first floor, but it's ok as there's a lift. Not a problem I thought, even though I would rather be downstairs. The lovely viewing lady unlocked the door and in we went, or, should I say tried to. The door and hallway were so narrow I couldn't drive right down it, and when I got to the lounge door, there was no way in hell I could turn the wheelchair into the room!
Ok,ok, I thought. Even though the housing man had obviously lied through his teeth when he said all flat were wheelchair access, I had already fallen in love with the place. I thought maybe I could leave the wheelchair in the special room and use a Zimmer frame in there. Imagine my horror when I entered the lounge and saw the kitchen. It was so tiny that I wouldn't even access it with a Zimmer frame let alone a wheelchair!! I could never use the kitchen. Only Mr Dolly could get in and that would be a very tight fit! Being a big bloke, when he turned in front of the cooker there was no space to open the oven door!!
I am so so upset. I love everything about this place. The location, decor, amenities everything! Apart from the flat. I am also very angry at being lied to. I didn't get back in time to phone the housing guy. I will be on the phone first thing in the morning.
Just to make matters even worse. The lady, who was so embarrassed that the flat was so unsuitable told us to stay there and she ran off to get someone else. She said she was really sorry about everything and we should never have been offered it. She then went on to say that she made no promises at all, but she wanted to show us a property downstairs. It was earmarked for an elderly lady on her own who was refusing to take a place upstairs as she was frightened of lifts, but the was a legal case going on and if things worked in our favour we would get first offer. Well, it was perfect! Large long galley kitchen. Wide doors and hallway. You could tell it was made for wheelchair access. Why they earmarked it for an old woman on her own that didn't even use a walking stick is beyond my comprehension!! It even had a small patio area outside the lounge.
A while later, the woman came back and apologised profusely, saying that she had just spoken to lettings and there was no way we could have it. Even though she explained the whole story. I could tell she was very angry.
I am so upset I could cry. I really want to live there. I even asked if we could take the one offered until a suitable one came up. She said they can't do that and the only thing I can do is put myself on the transfer list. I know damn well there will be few people who will want to take a place with a kitchen like that.
I will get hold of my support worker tomorrow. I just know she is gonna go berserk!!
Sorry for long post. I tried to make it short as possible.

So sorry to hear that Dolly, it sounded like a dream come true. I suppose it's back to the drawing board. Such a shame and we all thought you were down your new local dancing on the tables, Shame on us. Let's hope another diamond place shows up or even better you manage to steal the old lady's, the stairs will do her the world of good. Keeping em crossed.

Oh no Dolly, I am so very disappointed for you. That is absolutely outrageous that an able bodied person may get it, when it's been purpose built. Perhaps you could take up a legal case for it yourself. I really do hope that you end up getting the place hun. Hope you feel better soon too.

Thanks for the support folks. I am off to bed for a while as I am burning up a bit. Granddaughter had a nasty bout of tonsillitis last week. Although I don't have tonsils anymore, she has definitely passed on her germs!

Dolly, I hope you're fast asleep at the mo, and regaining your strength for the fight. Sounds as if you had a decent lady showing you around, but her 'jobsworth' bosses, who have probably never had to consider their own frailities and sound as if they couldn't give a **** about others. To give an able bodied person, regardless of age, a home designed for 'wheelchair access' and expect one who needs it, to go upstairs in a totally unequipped place 'beggars belief'... but, unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me in this day and age. It certainly merits following up and I know you will. Life seems to give the biggest trials to the strong... and you and Mr D. are certainly that.

So sorry to hear that someone made a monumental cock up Dolly. Really hope that something can be done, and as others have suggested, is there any way you and Mr D can, at the very least, threaten some legal action of your own? Am assuming though, that as the flat offered is totally unsuitable, that it doesn't count as one of your "strikes"?

What a massive disappointment for you both Dolly. was the explanation she gave you satisfactory to you? If it was not, I would take it up with the Head of Housing Management. Don't let them fob you off , they knew your circumstances and should not have offered you a place that was obviously unsuitable for your needs, they cannot take this as a 'refusal' on your part and it should not effect your status . Hope your support worker can help you.
