The trouble is that anyone can buy industrial size fireworks for home use now.
These days you could probably launch a satellite with some of the fireworks that are being sold.
I was driving home last year and saw a car full of idiots go past and they threw a lit firework at a groups of girls who were just walking along the pavement.

What gets me is they wouldn't let people buy bombs and effectively this is a bomb also guy Fawkes was a terrorist when did celebrating that become a good thing. My poor izzy doggy has been going crazy this last week barking the place down every time she hears one. I'm all for fireworks in a controlled setting. It's about time something was done! Rant over and breathe Nats x

Fireworks to me now are annoying, but I would not take away the pleasure they give to the young. I was young once and enjoyed seeing them and really enjoyed letting my kids enjoy them. It's a good idea if they are just available for shows but if that was law how could we all get in? It would be packed!
It's also a good idea just to let people use them in their own back yard and have fun.
I am a pet lover but there are wildlife issues on displays to also consider, and the fireworks are a lot more bigger and louder than domestic ones, although yes you can buy similar ones but not normally in the same amount as used in a display.
To propose banning them is not fair on any count, after all they have been around far longer than any of us! I'd prefer to ban the bomb. Nobel was not right!
Nice to see a good 'ol' debate

I don't think the goverment will ever ban fireworks because the income they generate must be huge.
Personally, I hate them & always have. My parents took me to a proper display when I was young & apparently I spent the duration of the fireworks display in the toilets crying & holding my hands over my ears.
Although I have a severe dislike of fireworks, I would only ban public sale. Haven't got too much of an issue when it comes to properly organised displays.

I think the issue is their misuse. Fireworks available to the public have have actually become smaller last the last few years, they might not look smaller but they do contain less gunpowder. The biggest issue is kids messing around and people letting them off in their back gardens ignoring the 24m safety guidelines. Worst of all with trees near by.

Reading your posts. I myself saying the word 'ban' is a little harsh, there should be a control on them, i.e if you buy them you have to fill out a form of some kind, saying what they are to be used for and when, and to show some kind of id, I now you have to over 18 this should raise to 21 imop Thanks for the grat response, Tony2

I say ban the bangs, make them pretty, but quiet. I don't know how people can afford them, the price is extortionate. Talk about money going up in smoke! Bit like cigarettes really.

My first post I said ban from public sale , however after reading other posts , I have to agree that ban is probably too harsh , but I still think that the sale of fireworks to the general public should be restricted to adults , as someone mentioned an age limit of at least 21 . I do however think that the use of fireworks outside the approximate dates of Nov 5th ( a week either side maybe ) and other legitimate occasions should be classed as a public order offence and dealt with as such . Contoversial ? ?

I think like anything it's difficult to enforce these kinda things. I personally still think only legitimate licensed organisers should be able to buy them. Although I do hear the arguments and think some very valid points have been made. Be safe Nats x

I don't think the goverment will ever ban fireworks because the income they generate must be huge. That's it, Hiss > For a couple of decades governments have been promoting drinking and gambling to try to generate spending, and we have porn channels fed to us via Freeview, they're desperate. Tony, I put up a petition a while ago, don't know if it's still open: allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=lounge&action=display&thread=3709&page=1I get absolutely fed up with the argument that "reasonable" people mustn't be asked to sacrifice something they can easily live without, for the sake of preventing suffering at the hands of unreasonable people. scylla

Contoversial ? ? Doesn't such legislation already exist Storm? I thought it did . . . this excerpt is taken from the Directgov website. www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/InYourHome/FireSafety/DG_064665Using fireworks legally It is against the law to:
•set off or throw fireworks in the street or other public place
•set off fireworks between 11.00 pm and 7.00 am – except during certain celebrations If found guilty by the courts, you could be fined up to £5,000 and can be imprisoned for up to three months. You may be liable for an on-the-spot fine of £80.
When you can use fireworks during celebrations You can let off fireworks :
•until midnight on Bonfire Night
•until 1.00 am on New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New YearEnforcing it is another matter . . . bit like using a mobile phone whilst your driving.

Lol Storm. To get that enforced where I live, is of course a complete impossibilty . . . assuming you could get through to the police in the first place . . . any offenders would be away on their toes, well before any officer's arrived on the scene. It's a farce really.
