Eeeek We're still using nicotine tho, thats the thing.... which reminds me, a few months ago, i was filling in a form for something or other and one of the questions was 'Do you use nicotine?' instead of 'Are you a smoker?'

Beautifully put Scylla. Are they now Lilac . . . that's a new way of putting it, although I always thought it was the chemicals in cigarettes rather than the actual nicotine that impaired healing . . . looks like that's not the case.

As far as it being nicotine that causes poor circulation, all I can go on is my own personal experience. As most of you know, I live in a cold climate. When I smoked, my hands were always cold. When I went out in the cold weather, I had to wear mittens, instead of gloves, because my fingers would get very cold, even while wearing a heavy pair of gloves.
Since I stopped smoking, I have noticed that my hands don't get cold anymore and I can wear gloves again, when I go out. I do believe that's due to an increase in circulation, due to me not smoking anymore.
Lilac, the anti-tobacco crowd have found themselves to be in a bit of a dilemma, concerning e-cigs, because e-cigs do not contain tobacco. Since they don't like anything that even looks like tobacco use, they have convinced the powers that be, that nicotine and not smoke/tobacco is the cause of all the worlds ills. Truthfully, nicotine is no more harmful than caffeine.

I am a little bit concerned about nicotine but have never wanted to say it before. I suffer from migraine and have had 2 mini strokes in the past. I was told by a Dr., and I can't say this is gospel as Dr.'s are anti everything nowadays, that nicotine can cause both. Migraine, strokes and heart attacks occur when arteries narrow and blood can't pass through them. Nicotine narrows arteries. It hasn't stopped me vaping though, I hasten to add. These goody two shoes will have you believing everything is bad for you. >

Anne, all I can say is that I have been told that nicotine is no worse than caffeine. That's not to say that caffeine is good for you, I doubt if it is. The real culprit in smoking is the smoke itself and the nasty chemicals that are contained in that smoke.
A few years ago, a study was done in California of people who live near the freeways. It was found that there was a higher rate of cancer among them than people who don't live near freeways. The only conclusion to be had from that study, is that motor vehicle emissions are the real culprit. Don't expect anything to be done about that, very soon.

All very interesting because when I went to one of these 'stop smoking sessions' held by the NHS I was told that Nic was not harmful as such, it was the rest of the stuff that was causing the damage, that was why we had to blow into a machine-thing-a-me-jig to measure the toxins.
Also we had the choice of several nic replacements including that silly small white thing that held capsules of nic to inhale, she told me to use it as much as I wanted, it did no harm at all.
About time they stopped all saying different things.

Caffeine is added to pain killers in small amounts as it's a feel good stimulant!
I went to those NHS meetings too Sandra as I was told my strokes were caused by smoking. (They weren't by the way.) They gave me the patches. What a waste of time, they may just as well have been elastoplasts. I only went to about 4 of the meetings, they were too patronising IMHO.

Anne, don't you know that smoking/tobacco/nicotine is the cause of everything that's wrong with the world. Well, actually that and junk food, which is the nanny's next target.

Probably. When the Dr. found out my strokes weren't caused by smoking as first assumed, > he gave me a lecture about how I must be eating too much red, fatty meats which had clogged the arteries in my brain. Steaks, fried bacon, pork and chops with fat on them. When he finally shut up, I asked him if he'd finished, he didn't answer, so I just said 'I'm vegetarian, so now what are you going to blame it on?' I never did get an answer and he discharged me from his clinic. Miserable old s*d.
