The article in the original post is referring to his column in last weeks Sun, so to claim he has resigned is not strictly true.

I like Top Gear - There, I've said it

Its a great entertainment show, that's right, I didn't say motoring programme, its purely entertainment.
If you want a motoring show like Top Gear used to be before it got axed and then revamped you need to watch 5th Gear, or you did before they realised that very few people were watching 5th gear and they tried and failed to turn it into something like the show Top Gear had become.

Lets face it, if you want to see a genuine road test style of review on the new (insert model of any number of boring, day to day runabouts that most people drive) then you tube it or take one for a test drive yourself.
If, however you want to see if the latest supercar can beat the best in Japanese public transport, or how many caravans and morris marina's you can destroy by playing giant conkers with them, then Top Gear is the one to watch.

Is Clarkson a bit of a knob ? Yes
Should he have hit the producer ? No, of course not.
Will he leave and take the show to SKY ? Probably, seeing they have been offering him increasingly large sums of money to do just that for the past few years.
Should he be compared to Hitler ? Bit of a leap that one if you ask me.
Will the BBC be better off if he goes ? They will lose a fortune, its the biggest money spinner they have.
Will the show survive without him ? He is the current incarnation of the show. If he went it would have to change too much and would be competing against him when he goes to sky.

Sorry for the long post, not a rant, only my opinion.

I wasn't comparing him to Hitler or Stalin but to the support, Love and Adulation some objectionable people garner. Take The Thatch, loved in the Home Counties by millions and reviled and hated by millions in the North of England and especially Scotland.

Fair enough, but it still seems like a bit of a stretch to me.

I would have picked someone more like Justin Beiber, or Jeremy Kyle.

Both are celebrities with a huge following that I and many more people find objectionable but who can't really cause millions of people the level of grief and hardship that your other choices did. Well maybe Beibers singing could, but ........

It seems to me that the million people who have supposedly signed the petition think Clarkson is just a Jack the Lad who got up to a bit of harmless fun by punching his producer. It is this view that celebs can do no wrong that allowed Savile, Harris, Gadd et al to abuse women and children for decades. I wonder if there would be a million signatures if he'd felt up a female producer? Celebs must learn that they are not above the law and that the type of behaviour that would get the rest of us instant dismissal is plain unacceptable. Good riddance.

did i like clarkson narr not really
the one thing you guys have missed though is how much are the bbc throwing away by canceling this series that has already had all the expensive bits filmed
this thing has been blown completely outa proportion and the amount of money that has already been spent will never be told

i think its time the bbc stopped charging a licence fee and started to compete on an level playing field and if that means adverts i dont mind(would be glad of a break in a few of the wifes soaps)
