I'm certainly not at the head modding stage yet. I agree that less cotton is better, despite some videos suggesting you should leave long tails and tuck them up inside the cover that seems to just clog things up for me, so I keep the tails quite short and that seems to keep things flowing nicely.

Had a "doh" moment this morning, rebuilt a mini RBA about three times. Dry hits & horrible flavour....was using one of those muji cotton pads and realised that I had cut the wick material across the grain instead of with the grain. I was wondering why it was so difficult to pull the wick through the coil without it feeling as if it was going to fall apart. Now I know

I've been having problems again since I got the ready wound coils and more cotton pads
With the first coil I tried, I was getting loads of dry hits. I think I even tried re-wicking and it didn't help. So I thought I'd try the other OCC head I hadn't used yet and that was giving me grief and horrible tastes as well, even though the first one worked fine.
So I tried another coil and wick in the RBA and got it a bit better and I'm not getting so many dry hits anymore (I seem to get them most often just after topping up the tank, even though there is still enough juice in the tank to stop the wick drying out and the wick is indeed saturated) but I've been having loads of juice leaking from the air hole and spitting hot juice hitting my tongue, which is rather unpleasant!
I rewicked it again and took some pictures this time (sorry about the poor quality/focus), in case anyone can see where I'm going wrong.
This is how the previous wick looked before I removed it.
Some shots of the new coil fitted.
Wick added.
Wetted with juice and poked in from the sides.
How it looks today, after about 36 hours.
I went back and read this thread and realised that I've been pushing the ends of the wick up, rather than down towards the juice channels, so I've just changed that and I'll see if it helps but can anyone say what is most likely to be causing leakage and spitting juice. Even when I wasn't getting the hot spitting juice (probably before I fitted the current wick) I found I was still sucking up a fair bit of juice into my mouth rather than vapour.

Wick too thick doveman. It's choking the juice flow. Cotton swells when wet.

Thanks tim, I'll try making them thinner. I think one of the earliest videos I watched said to use a 6mm strip, which was way too thick and I've been trying for around 3mm and even then I have a bit of difficulty getting it through the coil but I think it's meant to be fairly tight, at least when I made one before that wasn't tight it didn't work very well either. I guess I just need to try a few different thicknesses until I get it right.

It's difficult to describe but when you pull the cotton through, too much will pull the coil to the side you are pulling, too little will pull through without any resistance. It is something that trial and error takes a big part in.

i tend to use a slightly smaller id on the coils to help with airflow

Try with a new lot of juice in a cleaned tank and pulsed coil(burns of the gunk) or a new coil. It seems to me as though the burnt taste has contaminated the juice over time, and thus the tank.

Bit too much wick, mostly on one side and even though you're not going win any prizes for that build it looks vapable...what watts you vaping at, the air hole you're set at and are you mouth to long or direct lung.
In other words you're not go get 40 watts through that MTL without a burnt hit.

I know every one has there own way that works for them when it comes to coils and wicks It's just a matter of trial and error till you get it right.
You need to try and get your coils spaced a little more evenly a tidy screw driver helps ,just push and pull the wraps of the coil till they are spaced evenish I tried cotton on these but had no joy so now I use rayon as cotton did not wick fast enough but rayon does , for me any way Now I have them set up fairly well and they taste good
Just read wat every one is saying ,take on board how you would like to do them and persevere When you make changes ,make small changes and in time you will get there
Good luck
