Whilst it was never "part of the plan" when I built the raised beds in the back garden, that they would save my replacement knees from any pain or discomfort, having spent the last few days working on the ground level of the front garden, I now realise that without raised beds, any normal height gardening for me now would be impossible.
3 days of ground level gardening and I am almost crippled. I sit here tonight, doped to the eyeballs with pain-killers and my legs are dead from the thighs down. Thankfully all the plants are in and all that is left is to barrow in the bark that will make it all look pretty.
Then, I can finally get back to the "real" garden that is at a decent working height.

Raised beds, the way to go lobeydosser! Here's hoping that the weather Gods will now look favourably on us all and give us the chance to get out and enjoy getting soil under our nails soon

Well today I finally managed to turn this:- Into this;- Okay, still a bit to do like new fencing and hopefully, once summer comes, some colour on the roses, but I'm getting there. It's amazing what 800 litres of Bark will do. Thank gawd for a trailer and lots of pain-killers!

The roses that are now in are half standards in Yellow, Pink, White and Red, but over the rest of the Spring we will add some full standard roses of different colours plus some other varieties of plants, suitable for that location and introducing different shapes, scents and colours. Now that we have done the basic groundwork, I can take my time and add bits and bobs as we see them.
I guess the one thing I have learned from all this is that gardens do not "arrive" as in Ground Force and programs like that. They evolve over time and they change through the years.

That evolution, to me, is the exciting part about gardening. We all have different amounts of time to devote to our gardens, different budgets to allocate, and different soil chemistry and climactic conditions to endure, but at the end of it all, the garden will slowly evolve. However the pace is so slow that there is plenty of time to adjust planning and planting to our own ends, watching what grows well and what doesn't survive our local conditions. My next door neighbour, a committed and enthusiastic gardener from whom I have learnt a great deal, always says that 'you begin to know exactly what to do in your garden just as you run out of the physical ability to do it!'. I hope I have a few more years of 'doing' yet!

Today I finally finished my Strawberry Cascade that has been built to screen the ugly Calor Gas Cylinders that stand in that corner of the garden. I only have enough Strawberry Plants for the first 3 boxes, but more are on order and now all I need is a Cow for the Cream and we will be all set for summer.

Hi Karma, We had a wee belt of hailstones about 3pm and then it rained at 4pm and "stopped play". Up until then it had been sunny and I got my Leeks, Carrots, Salsify and Beetroots all planted out and under fleece. So all in all it was a productive day.

Yesterday I was lying on our new garden couch in the garden snoozing in the sun with our Bichon, Coll, lying on top of me like a wee furry blanket, also snoozing in the sun.
Today the couch is back under its protective cover which is now covered in Sleet!!!!!
Thank goodness all my young seedlings are also under protective covers.

May 2015;- Up to my ears in mud and glaur and wondering if the rain would ever stop. During the summer, more rain and most of the wood and tools, hidden under tarpaulins trying to keep them dry. All in all, trying to imagine the whole thing finished and me relaxing in a comfy chair, on the deck looking over a finished garden.
May 2016;- Spent the day under wall to wall blue skies with the sun beating down and me, in shorts and t-shirt, sitting in my comfy chair admiring my handy-work.
Okay, okay, it ain't quite finished yet, but it is almost there and the veggies and flowers are coming up a treat.
What a difference a year makes!!!!

It was juicy, spicy and luvverly!!!!!
Quite surprised that we would be eating something already, but if the rest are half as good as this one was, we will be eating veggies all summer!

The latest market research has shown that in Scotland, ones "5 a day" of fruit and veg is, on average, 3 packets of Cheese & Onion Crisps and 2 sticks of Rhubarb Rock. Hopefully with a trowel and a bag of compost, at least the Dosser Family can move away from our national average!!!!
