Radio 1 launched this day in 1967, and the first record Tony Blackburn played was...

I was already out of my teens, and it didn't compare to Radio Luxembourg, or the 'pirates'... Caroline, London etc but it was a start. I loved the 'pirate stations'... I was a 'real rebel' snickering_smiley

I remember a tiny little transistor radio with no speaker, just a white plastic ear phone. Luxumberg fading in and out again every few minutes. Was a relief when Caroline, Jackie and Radio London arrived, at least you could hear them reasonably well.

I can't recall ever hearing the Big Pirates like Caroline although I believe it was possible given the right atmospheric conditions. I listened as a teenager to Radio Scotland which broadcast from the North Sea off the mouth of the Forth. Great days and great music.
