Have been trying to get onto Betfair in the last hour, to place my 'life changing' bet, but their website is down, and is due to a 'power outage' at their data centre. While this is not important (I'm sure I'd have lost anyway) it just makes you think of all the everyday things we take for granted, because of electricity. We've all had the 'lights out' and power cuts from time to time, but can you imagine being without it for any length of time. Who needs nuclear weapons?... just shut off the power and we'd be 'naked' to any threats. My thought for the night... sleep well... but take a candle!

<<<Who needs nuclear weapons?... just shut off the power and we'd be 'naked' to any threats. >>> Actually Raffles we would not be under any threat as the MOD is well supplied with alternative power sources. It would be just us mugs that would suffer, as usual.

that's they the govt was trying to get as many houses as possible to be fitted with solar panels back in the day, so a lack of power stations wouldn't be the end of electrikery.... but like all the great ideas the implementation was somewhat lacking .... perhaps they should have invested in new power stations after all ....
and yes without electric most things fall down, there was a great tv series about what life would be like if say a meteor bombardment (lots of small ones getting close enough to land before they explode in the air creating an emp that takes out all the electricity) it was a bit far fetched (because why would the entire planet suffer the same bombardment effect in a 12 hour period wiping out all power generation in the world) the effect was pretty fast, zero comms = instant chaos 90% of food production failed and the aftermath of a very short control grab by various gangs the majority of the population was either dead through violence or starvation with small isolationist enclaves all that survived after a few months.....
as to vape gear, like my phone and various other gadgets its chargeable via a solar or dynamo unit, I have a couple of each but the dynamo unit needs you to charge its internal battery before you plug in the device

I remember the 70s and the 3 day week and the power cuts and we managed, but we had less reliance on electricity that we do now. Then some pubs struggled as they went over the electric delivery pump system, the older pump types were fine and opened with candles on the bars. Some shops with old fashioned scales and till drawers opened and were fine.
Now if the power goes everything goes. I cant think of any business/shop that does not rely totally on the delivery of power.
The powers that be, now have us totally in the grip of generating money for them forever.

I've got my solar panels already with a diverter so if I'm not using all the electric I'm making it sends it to the hot tank so free hot water. When my old gas back boiler packs in I'll replace it with a woodburner. I like the idea of being as fuel independent as possible just in case there is a zombie appocalypse I did consider getting a small generator after the last power cut we had but then I forgot about it, lol. What you said about 70s is just so true yahoo2u2 I remember my mum getting out the camping stove and paraffin heaters. things were simpler then
