nynex never installed fibre optic 10 years ago ..... it's all a fallacy .. I doubt we will see much above the 30 mb we are getting at present , not heard of vm having any switches , they rely on orange for their support the old ntl had switch locations at most orange switches around the north west and from my understanding it wasn't a happy relationship Fibre to door isn't reality in the UK storm.. They're just about catching up on fibre to cabinet and Virgin are ahead of BT on this.. When I had Virgin BB till last year Virgin even had the cheek to use the BT socket to get their phone into the house instead of installing their own socket like they are supposed to..It was a right pain to get back onto a ADSL provider and regular telephone when I switched away..I complained to Ofcom and get Virgin to pay for it..

adsl is simply having a double twisted pair as far as I'm aware and is limited to what it can deliver , that said we are still hearing of the mega d/l speeds we can expect ..... again media hype and more bull

Yes, BT Infinity is limited to 76 mbits by design.. That's the max you can get..

I agree with you on the fibre to cabinet , but in reality yet again , it isn't being delivered as fast as they are actually saying it is , I'm lucky to be near the local cab and get what I pay for . coax up my road and pretty fast .
I'm not knocking vm , but when they advertise they should say fibre optic is only to your local cab and not your house

The way they are doing it storm
BT will offer from lowest expected speed which should be about 51 mb up to 72. If people are getting less there is a problem
But virgin do roll fibre to the house just not in the house for safety reasons.

VM cable speeds are not really affected by your distance from the cabinet so they get away with it, I guess..

I disagree with you on that one daz m8 .. I had my installation done by the now defunct nynex .. absolutely nothin has been done to upgrade the quality of the lines in .. so in that respect I'm still running on fast coaX ..
As for safety running fibre to a house don't go there m8
Give me a reason for safety I really am interested

Storm if your running on coax mate your not running on cable your running essentially on the same current system as bt. Cable when first rolled out to my knowledge has always been fibre optic. Thats all I know and all I remember, but agree shocking cabling.

Well I just had BT Infinity installed - just checked and I am getting 33Mbps download, hmm it has gone down a bit, now where is that smug emoticon At the moment I get 31mb d/l on VM 30mb, soon to be upgraded for free. And I only pay £15 a month "unlimted" download. Now where's that even bigger smug smilie! Yep, same here Disco, On 30, currently getting 33.2mb, We get put up to 60mb next month for no extra charge. VM is fantastic, I've been through quite a few, started on Virgin, went to BT, to TalkTalk, to Sky, only to end up coming back to Virgin, as the rest were terrible at best in my area. I really like VM. Sorry you had problems though Perps, I guess like most technology, it's only great when it works.

Oh and regards the posts above, Virgin and BT are both FTTC/FTTN (fibre to cabinet/fibre to the node,) which are both basically fibre optic cable up to the point of the cabinet, as far as I was aware. Since our VM cabinet is a few houses away, we do quite well on it. To understand the differences between different types of fibre services see this page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_to_the_x

So... I was in Maidstone yesterday and noticed a VM shop. On a whim I popped in and asked what it would cost to upgrade my broadband speed from my current 10 meg. The guy took my details, checked my current package, and quoted for an upgrade from 10 to 60 meg, from router to super-hub, and an extra TV box for a second room - at a pound less per month than I pay now! He then phoned mission control to check it, got confirmation, and made them put a note of the call on my records as confirmation of the price drop. What a result - and all in ten minutes flat. Installation next Saturday whoop!

Wow shows it pays to check these things from time to time. I am with Sky, never been fast, fast, but since moving here, having it connected wed its as slow as a snail they say not to unplug for 10 days as they will be monitoring it to speed it up, blinking hope so, cant even try to load vttv let alone watch it.
