Perp thats not necessarily true I happen to know for a fact that upgrades are being rolled out but if your exchange is enabled now and you really want it you can have it.

it does macca fan they have to do work in their switch to make the speed faster that was the last training we got before I left virgin. But sometimes they have already enabled it but roll out the speed later.

I live next door to a fairly high flying Virgin Media networking manager. Virgin Cable BB is completely independent from BT..They have their own network as far as I know..For speed upgrade, they buy the extra capacity from wholesale bandwidth providers and then send settings to the modem router which resets the top speed setting..This setting signal is repeated many times a day to make sure the end user hasn't overwritten or meddled with the setting to get more speed.
Only Virgin ADSL and voice comms uses BT backbone..

Macca thats interesting very much so however that is not what we were trained up to give information out on. Virgin media like bt has their own switch/exchange nationally which covers proportions of areas not as many as bt however. They have to upgrade each and every switch to be able to cope with the extra capacity hence, why they are doing it in phases. I only know this because when I worked in teeside it was also one of the switches. Sunderland is the next one down from that. They were the old cable company switches.

One wonders how the afore mentioned technology is allegedly being sent via standard cable .. to get any faster surely we need fibre optic .... vm say they have fibre optic to your door , which is absolute rowlocks , we have still got standard cable from when nynex initiated the whole shebang over 10 years ago .. so where is the upgrade in service coming from

That would be coming from the switch virgin are able to offer faster bb because the data sent along the cable tends to not lose as much as the old coax cable. e.g send 100 mg you will get around 92mb in theory. The cable therefore goes to the outside of your house then the remaining cable about a foot or so is coax. Bt however are doing Fibre to the cabinet so the coax then runs from the cabinet to your house unless your in a 100meg area, which means the exchange has been fibre enable and the cable can be put right to your door.

I hear what your saying but yes they would still have to upgrade the switch to be able to deal with more data being sent is what im trying to say apologies if im not making sense, had a fab day celebrating and the pimms has been flowing.
But maccafan you are confusing me about faster adsl, are you talking about infinity thats fibre to the cabinet??

I was talking about the first upgrade in 2007-2008 was to enable BT exchanges to jump from 8 mbps to 24 mbps..So actual line speed depended on your distance from the exchange..
Second upgrade is fibre from exchange to broadband cabinet and then coax to door like you said. BT Infinity and others to follow...

nynex never installed fibre optic 10 years ago ..... it's all a fallacy .. I doubt we will see much above the 30 mb we are getting at present , not heard of vm having any switches , they rely on orange for their support the old ntl had switch locations at most orange switches around the north west and from my understanding it wasn't a happy relationship
