I point them down to the floor(ish), that's my take although others may vary. Horizontal shouldn't be a problem but pointing up is generally considered a no no.

The closer to full they are I find the better the taste. Although if it's too full then the flavour becomes muted (for a while) generally don't fill it higher than the silicone bit). If you're running low, tip it to the side and swish it to make sure the wicks are well coated so you don't get a burnt taste (a dry hit)

Crackling varies depending on the juice you use, in my experience, it's nothing to worry about. You'll know if you get a dry hit, it tastes rough.

The wick and coil IS what you replace, if you're getting no taste / vapour then that's when you need to change it.

I tend to give mine a good clean every week and can get the clearos and heads (wicks & coils to last well over a month this way).
