Today is my granddaughters school play. She has quite a big part narrating the story and singing. Whilst she was in the bath last night, my daughter decided to trim her fringe as it was starting to get in her eyes. She did a good job and left DGD in the bath whilst she went to do something. This is what greeted her on her return.... I guess DGD didn't think the trim was good enough for her big day and finished it off herself!!! As you can imagine, daughter went into meltdown and the only thing DG could come up with was..... "Pleeeeeeeeease don't tell Santa"

I have one of those iPad keyboards. They are very good, but I can't use it at the moment as where I sit doesn't allow me to rest it anywhere. Once we move to a new place I will get it sorted. You're still relegated to the cupboard under the stairs I take it Blownupdolly................. Yes, it's very dark in here, could you come round and unpick the lock. Mr Dolly is very cruel and locks me in here when he goes to work

I also lament the lack of basic living skills taught in school these days, we learned how to cook, sew and even iron. The expectation is I suppose that these necessities should be passed on by parents but judging by some of the students living with my daughter when she was in uni halls of residence it is obvious this doesn't happen. For example the poor lad trying to wash his quilt at the launderette because he simply didn't know the cover came off, or a friend of my daughter's who had no idea how to iron, she'd never used one. How these poor kids survive alone is beyond me.. I think a lot of it had to do with parents completely pandering to their children. They now have a complete seance of entitlement. They assume just because they want something they should have it. Not have to work for it. Why bother learning to iron when mum will do it? Why learn to cook when there's microwave meals and take away. Nail on the head Jerri. I often say that in a way we are to blame for the generation we have spawned. When I say 'we' I mean the culture and new age way of doing things that was thrust upon us, as opposed to older fashioned values and discipline that I grew up with. A lot of kids today can't learn to cook, iron, and generally look after themselves because their mothers probably weren't doing it either as they were out at work instead of being at home. I am not blaming mothers, some do it out of necessity as I had to, but the end result is what we now have.

I also visited the London hackspace with a view to joining as i used to regularly commute through london and go right past it. Now living further out and not being in the job i was means it was no longer viable. It looks like a great place to learn new skills and access equipment & knowledge not usually available to most mere mortals. Highly recommended place! (even if i am slightly jealous i can no longer get there easily) I have been looking at their website chainmaker they have a place in Chelmsford and Colchester. I fear I have unleashed a beast. seniorphil My husband is very interested in going too, after reading your recommendation. God knows what he will be doing, but he's one of these blokes who likes to fiddle about with stuff.

And could have been let out many years before that by bowing down to their demands for release, but refused!! I think about that a lot right now. If he had been a lesser man, he could have agreed, got out, and caused havoc.

step daughter has a couple of friends 16-17 yrs old whom don't know who nelson Mandela is? yes they think he's either Morgan Freeman or Martin Luther King, I kid you not That's ironic Andy, as the little one has stayed here over night, and my daughter phoned to say that they had been sent a letter from school saying all the kids in her class had to be told the story ofNelson Mandela as they will be discussing it in class. Now, how do you explain racism to a 6yr old that lives in a little village with few people of colour living there? As often said, no child is born racist, they learn it. The big thing for me is, how do I explain apartheid to someone so young? How do I explain the sporting boycotts during that era to a 6yr old? As mentioned previously in this thread, I don't think they should have to be focusing on this kind of thing at such a young age. Older kids yes, but six??? ???

I think the complexity of some of the work given to kids when they're little puts them off, it should be a time for building their confidence, instead some of them are overwhelmed at an early age, especially if there's no one able to help at home, so the downward spiral begins... Absolutely agree with you. I admit I was really shocked when I saw the work sheet she had. She did lose a bit of confidence in herself when she started the new term in September. Now I know why.

I honestly believe that our generation (mid 1950s - mid 1960s) learned more in 10 years of school, leaving at 15, than this generation learns in anything up to 18 years of school/college/university ... you only have to watch TV programs like The Weakest Link or Pointless to be astounded by how little they know. All not helped by the likes of Joey Essex et al, being held up as someone to aspire to! The dumb bimbo is not just alive and kicking in Essex but countrywide now. As long as you look good it matters not that your head is filled with hot air.

Sadly it can only get worse after the education international league table was published last week based on countries performance. Funny you mention this stamina. I have thought the education standards have dropped immeasurably in recent years, BUT, I have discovered it must be in the older pupil groups. A couple of months back I started helping my 6yr old grand daughter with her homework. Whilst I was considered pretty good academically at school. I got an O level pass Mark of 87% in maths. I am embarrassed to say that some of the questions and puzzles she gets for homework were unbelievable! I didn't know the answer to some of them! How embarrassing!! Yet, when you see how dumbed down a lot of teenagers are, it makes me think there must be some inherrant problem further down the line in education. I suspect it is a lot of teachers inability to control a classroom full of them, therefore making teaching a lower priority than containment. I might be wrong, but seems very odd to me.

And..... I'm out. I am so god damn sick of bailing out its unreal. Mr Dolly woke up this morning and couldn't get out of bed! His back seems to have gone into spasm. Stupid git thought it would ease off but no. Gonna have to take him either to a doc or the hospital. I do feel sorry for him, but so, so, gutted to miss the meet of the year. Hope you all enjoy it. Have a drink for me. Just drug him and jump in the Dolly bus, give him enough drugs for several hours though I would, but the 111 service has told me I have to take him to A&E god knows how long we will be there as it's a Saturday.
