Nail on the head Jerri. I often say that in a way we are to blame for the generation we have spawned. When I say 'we' I mean the culture and new age way of doing things that was thrust upon us, as opposed to older fashioned values and discipline that I grew up with.
A lot of kids today can't learn to cook, iron, and generally look after themselves because their mothers probably weren't doing it either as they were out at work instead of being at home. I am not blaming mothers, some do it out of necessity as I had to, but the end result is what we now have.

As for the skirt smokey. Not sure what to do apart from be honest yet do it as kindly as possible.

That's ironic Andy, as the little one has stayed here over night, and my daughter phoned to say that they had been sent a letter from school saying all the kids in her class had to be told the story ofNelson Mandela as they will be discussing it in class. Now, how do you explain racism to a 6yr old that lives in a little village with few people of colour living there?

As often said, no child is born racist, they learn it. The big thing for me is, how do I explain apartheid to someone so young? How do I explain the sporting boycotts during that era to a 6yr old? As mentioned previously in this thread, I don't think they should have to be focusing on this kind of thing at such a young age. Older kids yes, but six??? ???

Funny you mention this stamina. I have thought the education standards have dropped immeasurably in recent years, BUT, I have discovered it must be in the older pupil groups. A couple of months back I started helping my 6yr old grand daughter with her homework. Whilst I was considered pretty good academically at school. I got an O level pass Mark of 87% in maths. I am embarrassed to say that some of the questions and puzzles she gets for homework were unbelievable! I didn't know the answer to some of them! How embarrassing!!
Yet, when you see how dumbed down a lot of teenagers are, it makes me think there must be some inherrant problem further down the line in education. I suspect it is a lot of teachers inability to control a classroom full of them, therefore making teaching a lower priority than containment. I might be wrong, but seems very odd to me.
