Actually it is, and I'm really cross with myself for having to start it as I don't like starting new threads when the answer is already out there a million times, but I can't find it.
I thought I'd asked this question on another thread, which I prefer to do, but can't find that either, even in the "last stupid question you asked" section of my profile, so if somebody has answered it apologies for not thanking you.
It may well be that I didn't actually ask it all, in which case I may well have memory issues.
Anyway, I've tried 2mm cotton wick in my Vivi and it didn't wick at all. Not one mm of capillary action was achieved from my scientific research of poking a length in the bottle and looking at it to see if it had gone darker after an hour.
I think I'll get some silica, but am I better off getting one thick bit of 2-3mm or using doubled over 1mm?
That's it, thanks for reading.

Did you boil the cotton wick before using it? as they can be impregnated (missus) with STUFF.

What wick did you try?
If you want to use cotton as a wick, roll your own wick with makeup remover pads or strands of bandage gauze. The ready made candle wicks are not very good..They look to have been treated with something even though they are advertised otherwise and the ones I tried do not wick well.

I use one thick one and one thin one together. Wicks fine. The nova heads you can buy now have generally three skinny ones bundled together.

Someone more knowledgeable will come along and give you a better answer but with 3mm wick it sounds as if when its all built up you are squeezing the wick........I have seen youtubes where it recommends that you carefully cut a slight nick out of the top silicon bit that sits on the top of the coil and wick

I have used 3 strands of 1mm silica wick on a nova using a paper clip as a former, worked well.

The answers to all the questions... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290657103551?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649No additives (allegedly), but it just doesn't get wet at all other than the parts which are left dunked in the bottle. Macca - I'm glad someone else has found the same. After spreading a thin coating of juice along a short length, it just seems to run down it rather than soaking in, which would indicate to me that there is some kind of coating. I'll have a go at boiling it and see if it improves it, but make up removers... I might raid Mrs Moon's dressing table this afternoon. Cheers all, if neither of these work, I'll look at getting some 1mm and doubling or trebling it up.

All unbleached means is what it says, makes them look good to the green types. They don't say 'no additives' Be interested to see if boiling it does make a difference, cos the price is pretty good.

You're right, they don't, and it made me wonder after I re-read it whether this is the case. I've spent the last half hour recoiling a cotton wool pad wick (100% cotton) which I procured from Mrs Moon, and have just fired it up. So far, so good.

I didn't say it was another person Anyway, after checking the contents, it says they're bleached without chlorine, so I'm off to boil some candle wick.

I had another look at the wick I got from the same fleabay source.
It's been treated with wax, I am pretty sure.

The plot thickens (as does the water probably) Did three separate boils of about twenty minutes each and it's dried overnight. I'll retest its wicking abilities tonight in a cup of purple squash so I can see if capillary action is occurring. I bet you can hardly wait for the outcome...
