OK, started all over again. Let the battery charge for 8 hrs (thanks Tetsab), took a new cart and a new atty, followed Hissie's instructions to the letter and SUCCESS! no bad taste in the mouth and copious amounts of smoke HOWEVER, my wife says I smell very strongly of alcohol (I guess PG is after all an alcohol ). Is that your experience also? If yes, then this is a bit of concern, because at work, I'd much rather prefer to smell of an analogue than alcohol, if you know what I mean.

Hi Jason,
Delighted to hear you've had more success this time around, it's frustrating having to be patient, but now you've done the 1st battery charge, future one will only be 2 - 3 hours.
As for the smell of alcohol . . . . no one has ever, ever said that to me in 10 months odd of vaping . . . caramel yes, as that's my favourite eliquid . . . but alcohol, no never.

I'm with Perpy on this one, never had anyone say I smell of alcohol during or post vaping. At worst, people can generally slightly smell the flavour of the juice I'm vaping.
Don't I would worry about it Jason, however, if it's a concern, maybe try VG based juices.

Jason I've been vaping for 2 & a half years & only ever had one comment on the smell of the vapour.
A non smoking friend kindly offered to take me on a longish trip in her tiny car. I asked if it was OK if I vaped & as she had no previous problems with me vaping near her she said -no problem. The windows in the car where closed as it was a cold day so I asked her what she could smell & her reply was just a slight pleasant popcorn/caramel whiff - even though I was vaping a tobacco juice at the time.
BTW, PG is an ingredient in so many everyday products from toothpaste to some margarines & non of them give off an alcohol smell. I'm guessing your wife's comments may be due to her concern about you vaping ?

Hi and welcome from me, too, Jason I see that you are venturing into a biggish battery mod - so much for "cig-like" being desirable and it shouldn't take you long to graduate to refilling carts with juices, either! And there are prime examples here of how you may soon be beguiled into VERY un-cig-like mods Whatever, I wish you happy vaping! scylla

I'm happy to report that the alcohol smell is no longer a problem - it was probably a one off thing (new atty?) and I now have her 'permission' to smoke inside so Yippee!! Scylla, I've already started refilling carts! and today being a Sunday, I'm almost 'chain' vaping such that I have to refill almost every 2 hours. Would you say this is par? Another thing: by playing around, I've noticed that I get the best kick by taking small, 1-2 puffs and releasing them from the mouth before taking a longer, smooth puff. This means that I have the battery button pressed for 6-7 seconds continuously. The Riva manual says it must be less than 5 seconds. Do I run a risk of damaging the battery/atty? Regards Jason

Jason you seem to have thoroughly cracked it Refilling every 2 hours whilst chain-vaping is awesome! You're doing something VERY right! Your puffing technique is spot on and I don't think you will damage your battery - I don't have a Riva but lots of others here do and they will soon be here to reassure you (or I'll drag them here ). scylla

Hurrah Jason!! Very pleased that you have sorted the problems out I take long drags on my Riva & it dosen't seem to have had any ill effects on the batteries.

Jason,
Welcome and well done!!
I'm fairly sure that my button pushing technique is very similar to yours and I haven't killed any batteries yet! I use Tornado batteries but they are very similar to Rivas.
Might be worth buying some sample size juices for a bit of variety.

Oh, I am pleased to hear that all is now going well for you Jason and quite relieved that others like Hissie have been dropping by with 510-specific tips and hints. (I'm mostly a 901 girl) You may find that as you are using a manual battery if you press the button about a second ahead of starting to draw you can skip the quick 'primer puffs' because you have basically 'pre-warmed' the atomiser. Having said that, I suspect we all have our own individual preferred techniques which vary according to which juice you are using, how well the hardware is performing and even your mood! Go ahead and develop your own. If more questions come up while you are settling in to vaping do be sure to ask if you are puzzled by anything - most of us still remember how uncertain WE were at the beginning when everything was new to us and are very happy to help if we can. Oh yes, I'll just echo everyone else on the 'alcohol smell' - that's a new one on me too, I've never heard anyone mention that before. ??? Hope you will continue to enjoy your vaping - in the warm and dry, like a civilised being should!

Hi guys Sorry but the alcohol smell problem has returned While we were driving, both the wife and my son complained about it smelling like beer :-[ though how my 11 year old son knows how beer smells (given that I hardly drink at all) is a mystery to me It happened again at home with my son and he doesn't want to be the guinea pig of my 'smell experiments' any more! 'Disgusting' is how he describes it. Can it be the juice? So far I've used Luxury Blend - 24mg, Home Counties - 24mg, and Pall Premium - 18mg, all from LF and PG based. Has anybody used any of these before? Can anyone please suggest some juices (preferably tobacco flavours as I'm not much into menthol or mint) Regards Jason
